Anyone have a recommendation for a good smoking moderately priced clay pipe? I really want to try one, but don't know any reputable clay makers.

Look on eBay, some nice unsmoked ones can be had for around $5-7 and s/h aroun $5, so all total ~$12. They'll be single walled...but you'll pay considerably more 3x for a double walled clay. Either way, they smoke like a clay!

I only smoke clays, I have bought them from black bear haversack, penn valley pipes and tobacco (they get there's from black bear), track of the wolf, they are all slip cast. There is a guy in New Zealand that makes one type of press cast pipe I forget the came of his company.

Where can I find the best prices for clays? Cost of pipe + shipping to Washington state. I want to try them but I am on a limited budget for the next month or so.

I bought three of these. One J broke and turned into the Frankenclay, one I gave to a budding pipe smoker and one I keep unsmoked in my cellar for the right time...

Good smoker at a good price.

And the Elizabethan pipes I tried (from P&C) are small and don't really smoke all that well.

I bought three of these as well (one being the nearly useless Elizabethan mentioned above).

One, I've smoked a lot, it smokes great, no problems (the 8 inch tavern).

The other (7 inch gouda) is almost as good...I personally don't like the curve and forward cant of the bowl, as I sometimes spill the contents. It has developed a crack in the bowl, but still smokes fine at the moment.

I don't know for sure, but I assume they are slip cast.

I noticed, however, that the same site is now selling some nicer clays....they look nice, and they say "hand made", but I don't see where it's specified whether they are slip or press. http://pipeshoppe.com/ps_MFclays.php

Lepeltiers are worth a look as well - http://www.lepeltier-pipes.com/
