Ok, not a full restoration, but cleaning it up a bit to smoke.

I got this pipe on eBay a while back. I think it was around 25 bucks with shipping. Here it is as received. I reamed out a bit of the carbon yesterday and now it is sitting with salt and in the bowl since yesterday. I couldn't find any fine grit sandpaper, so I rubbed down the stem with 0000 steel wool. I'll post more pics as I go.

I have a technique to clean up the wood a little bit very quickly that I want to try. I'll let you know how that goes also.

That's what I did, then you can experiment and not worry about wrecking a good pipe.

Amazing what some $1.00 bristle-brushes and a little moonshine, excuse me, Everclear will do. Don't breathe the vapors, and don't smoke while you're doing it, or you might pull a Richard Pryor.

I've got it cleaned up enough to smoke now. I let it rest overnight, and am going to fire it up at lunch. Here's some pics. I sanded the rim of the bowl, a bit much. I am not sure if I am going to maybe put some wax on it or just let it be.

Looking good. Have you thought about sanding a bit more char off the rim and then re-staining it with a contrasting (or darker) color? Wouldn't be too much more work and would look great! Either way, well done so far!

I may do just that. Sand it a bit more, take it to the natural wood, then as you say, I can stain it. Right now I want to smoke it! :D
