Do not try to smoke though a gurgle. If you have a gurgle in a pipe that does not usually gurgle there is probably an obstruction. A pipe cleaner will usually cure the problem or a quick blow into the stem.. Just cover the bowl.

Doug, thanks for also including the final step of the quick blowback into the stem. I always forget to convey that part. :beck:

Indeed! An extra absorbant pipe cleaner comes in handy right about then!

Most of the Toby I smoke is on the dry side so the blowback technique is all i've used. I've found drawing slower also helps keep the dreaded gurgle at bay.

Only if you get an obstruction in the airway. Pay attention children.

Or, if like jpberg, you put watery-soap in it to blow bubbles.

I have a bent bulldog that gurgled every time I've tried it. I put it aside until I get better at pipe smoking. None of my other pipes have done that for a while(three cobs, a pear and two straight briars), maybe I should try it again. I usually ran a pipe cleaner into it when it happened, but the accompanying bite was bad enough I just put it aside.

I have been known to have a gurgle-er if i'm at home and its bugging me that much ill go for a pipe cleaner if not ill either keep going or blow gently back through the pipe which tends to cure it. I don't often get a gurgle in my cobs tho

Actually, I was smoking my IMP when I started this thread. Most often when I get a gurgle is when a small piece of tobacco gets sucked into the airway and causes turbulence and a very restricted draw. I have even had the culprit get speared by the pipe cleaner and removed that way.
