Just back from my regular tobacco shopping trip, and picked up my usual plugs and flakes. I've mentioned before - that I often add a tin of Presbyterian or Punchbowle, which lasts quite a long time, as I only fancy Latakia occasionally. Well, this time - on a whim, I got a tin of the fabled 'Squadron Leader', for the first time in a few years. I don't have any particularly fond memories of this stuff, but in the past I've probably stuffed it in a briar - that's well impregnated with the likes of Condor, or St.B. LOL.
So, for an unbiased appraisal -I'm puffing SL in a clean clay, and boy!....is this stuff good! - subtle, involved, maybe not as strong as I'm used to, but very satisfying!. Never cease to be amazed at the difference the pipe makes to a blend!.....I'm going back for another tin of SL at the weekend!:th1:

More often than not, I don't want something that's real big with latakia. SL is a little light in that dept. I really like the orientals that are in the forefront. I guess if you liked a lat bomb SL is not really for you. As it gets older the Va really comes to the forefront and it takes a whole other dynamic. Great weed!

Yea It's good stuff. I thought it was an average mild English until I smoked it in a meer. Knocked my socks off. Got a lot of very delicate oriental flavor that I think is masked somewhat smoking it in a brair.

I agree, I have been smoking it mostly in a Meer. Not on purpose but it just worked out that way. I don't use that pipe for anything else either, again, it just worked out that way but it helps alot. A pipe that is ghosted with, say Westminster would definitely overwhelm the SL.

Hmmm....might have to try it tonight in my new clay.
I "was" going to smoke some Escudo, or OGS, or Erinmore Flake in the clay tonight.
    Decisions, decisions!

It is amazing how much flavor can be coaxed out of SL with very slow and careful smoking. Right now it is my favorite morning smoke on the weekends.

It's great stuff. However, I like Skiff and Presby even more.

Just finished some SL that had 2.5+ years of age on it, and it was fantastic. I like it so much more with some age on it, I may actually buy some more to long-term cellar.

Spot on advice for anyone that wants to unlock the mysteries of SL. Avoid smoking it in a latakia-ghosted briar. A clay, a cob, a meer, or even a virginia briar would be best.

I wasn't a fan until I smoked it in Buck (my grizzled I.M.P).

Lovely stuff, S.L. The other day, I mixed S.L. roughly half-and-half with SG 'Best Brown Flake', because I only had a bit left of each, and the combination was one of the best smokes I've had. I'll try that mixture again.

My buddy loves SL, I haven't tried it yet myself, maybe he and I should get together for a smoke... ;)

I've mixed those two and quite liked the effect. In fact I like blending best brown flake with a couple other SG tobaccos

I like SL alright, but I don't see it as being as spectacular or otherwise transformational as some claim it to be. I will probably buy it again, but I won't be actively searching it out if it becomes more scarce.

I agree, but then I'm more of a Va smoker than an English man. It's good stuff, though. When I want English, I lean towards SL 7 times out of 10.

I sometime get the urge to order a tin of SL in the colder weather, I've also noticed the different, subtle flavours when smoking it in a meer, certainly makes it more interesting.
