I've been waiting years for one Kaywoodie to cherish - thought it'd probably be a sweet old gourd calabash to replace my (also cherished, but) garden-variety Pioneer. So, out of the blue on ebay....

I am a big fan of sitting pipes like cherrywoods and pokers, I gravitate to fishtail bits and army mount pipes that dismantle and fit in a pocket and I definitely prefer the geometry of a taller chamber and a narrower bore. Smoked this puppy for the first time the other day and it is a pip. Not a teenie weenie Peterson barrel, this full-sized KW is 6.5" x 1 1/2" x 3/4" but still weighs a very clenchable 1.5 ounces. I don't know squat about Kaywoodies but when I saw this pipe I knew it was made for me. Hoping no cracks or secret creepy stuff appears but, right now, it smokes like a dream and I hope we have a long and smokey future together. :D

As far as I can tell this pipe model is "Setter" and then described according to the finish/bowl shape. There is no nomenclature on the pipe other than the KW emblematic on the stem and the stamp on the pipe bottom, photo below. I am not a student of KW's but learn* there were three or four "setter" pipes in the KW line over the period 1950-1968 that were named according to shape (like "Hungarian", etc.). The exception, called only "Setter", is described as shankless with a ridged hole for a slender, filter-free, push-bit. Flat bottomed, it was available in panel, billiard and poker shape, smooth or textured ($10 new). Mine, a textured poker, cost more than $10. :D

In the photo below see nomenclature and the ferrule-capped airhole. The ferrule appears original to the pipe. I cannot speak highly enough about how it smokes. The briar manages heat well and I assume the pipe is between 40-60 years old. Maybe if a KW collector picks up on this we can target the period for this class of pipe a little better. The airhole is deadcenter and bottom. Draft is not what you'd call wide open but it makes for excellent flake sipping as long as you don't tamp too hard and block the airhole or "slender" bit.
