So I was getting pretty irritated cause for 2 1/2 months I been smoking a pipe and for 2 of em I knew there was something I just wasn't getting. I read, I watched videos, hell I even laid awake at night thinking about it and finally I caught a glimpse of it last night and was able to duplicate it again tonight. I managed to get 10 minutes or more without heating the pipe up. I know I ain't there yet but I feel like I ain't pushing on a door that says pull anymore.

Just wanted to share my happiness with everyone, and thank you all for helping me get there.

Right around the time you decide to stop fretting over whether you're packing right or wrong, tamping too much or too little, using the correct puff per minute ratio and just decide to load the sucker up and go for it is when it all comes together, at least that's the way it happened for me... I can now happily get through a cob full of CH and honestly not remember if I even tamped or not. I know I did because the tamper has ash on it that wasn't there earlier, but it was automatic and I did it without even thinking about it. That's a good smoke right there! And congrats! Sounds like your doing fine to me!

For me, the revelation (ha) came after watching this video...

I noticed how the smoked just kind of wafted out of his mouth...and I got it...no huge cloud...just a gentle puff.

And now we know how smart he really was. Off topic: I wonder what he smoked?

Now here's the real question... Did he smoke a pipe because he was smart, or was he smart because he smoked a pipe?

Kind of a chicken or egg question for you!

That's great to hear, Joe. My instincts tell me you're a real pipe smoker. And that you're in this for the long haul.

The road is bumpy at first. But you can look forward to a whole string of victories like this. For such a simple activity, pipe smoking is a real art. And, before you know it, one of the most enjoyable parts of your day.

I'm living proof that you don't have to be a rocket scientist to smoke a pipe! Don't worry new guys, it will all come together like it did for our OP, it just ain't that hard to do, I still don't really get that whole "theory of relativity" thing though. :nwor:

Ah ha moment? For me it was the day I figured out, "Yes! It is possible to fill a pipe with less than forty-'leven thousand tons of pressure." Been downhill ever since. Glad you hung in. We need more qualified Old Farts.
