I've come to accept that the bowl is made of briar. It isn't a connoisseur's briar, but it is sturdy stuff and it delivers what it promises. I can't tell you how they carve it, but it is uncanny.

The Medico pipe is a mysterious briar bowl and stem, and a cheap, but remarkably durable, plastic mouthpiece. The two are joined by a metal ferule that holds a filter. I use the filters as designed.

When the pipe was new, the components didn't fit together. I would have to smoke three bowls back to back until all the components expanded to fit into perfect harmony. Practice makes perfect. I will give a conservative estimate that it took about three hundred smokes until the Medico pipe for sale on the back of the filter box worked like a charm. It was never bad, but it took a long while to work out the glitches. I'm glad I stuck to it. The pipe and I worked together until we are both satisfied.

Would like to see yours, WK. I have four myself.
A Conqueror, a Medalist, and two dublins that
don't have a designation. The Conqueror is the
best smoker out of the bunch.

I have a Medico that I acquired in a garage sale that is in good shape and smokes decent.
What is so special or what is the allure with Medico pipes?
Is there something I should know or be aware of?
Am I lucky to have one? lol
    Seriously.

Mine's a straight Cavalier. I've had it three or four months. Am I lucky to own one? I think so, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I know of no great quality of the
Medico pipes that one should rush
out and buy one. If you pick up one
for cheap, then excellent. If not,
there are plenty of other inexpensive
pipes out there that offer up good smokes.

I have no rush to get one but there is a "cool" factor involved with these pipes. I am interested in how they do as they are inexpensive.

I have mixed feelings about the Medico Lancer I have. It has a great feel to it- but the "Brylon" (Briar/Nylon composite) makes smoking it leave a "plastic feel" to the entire bowl. It's kinda hard to explain- almost likie smoking the really cheap MM "cherry wood" or the Chinese pipe I got for Christmas. Either briar, meerschaum or my ceramic pipes are more comforting than the "Brylon".:puffy:

One of my best smokers is a 60's vintage Medico Crest. You can still find them cheap and once in a while unsmoked.
