I'll be out of town for a few days when this pipe arrives, so I'll have to wait to try it out. But it was one of those auctions where I dropped a bid on what I was willing to pay, and walked away for awhile....having come back from taking the dog for a walk, won the sucker! I've been reading alot of your opinions on meers, all very positive. So opinions welcome!

Well, the thing is that it's an SMS, which is a big name in meerschaum pipes. Samil and Beth Sermet have owned and run that company for a very long time, and are really good folks. SMS pipes can be either quite good or not so good, as far as how they smoke. I own two - one of each. The good one is a sturdy fellow and accepts all the abuse I've given it over the years (dirt-grimed fingerprints, dropping on carpet or grass, smoking in all kinds of weather) and the other one needed to have its draft hole opened up, which repairman Floyd Norwood took care of for me. If you can get a pipe cleaner from the bit to the bowl without too much effort, the pipe should smoke fine.

You have a piece of meerschaum history there! Let us know how she smokes!

I should add that while I only own two know, I've owned and smoked 4 other SMS meers. 3 were pretty good and one was absolutely awful. I didn't know about Floyd Norwood at the time and I dumped it. The rest were traded away over the years. Wish I had one in particular back! It was a tall 4-paneled pipe and smoked great.

Thanks, I knew SMS was a good name and without breaking the bank I figured this one was a good introduction. Wish it would arrive before I leave but doubtful. I'll have somethink to look forward to when I get back....can't wait to inspect it and give it a try!

No idea. I doubt even the Sermets could tell you. Meerschaum pipe provenance is one of the hardest things to figure in the pipe world. Ismet Bekler was the first to sign his pipes and that didn't occur until the '70's or '80's. I own three antique meerschaums and I have no idea even who carved them.

My final answer is not to concern yourself with its age. That kind of thing will drive you crazy. :ohyh:

Nice pipe! Like DMK said, they can be up and down in smoking quality, but in my experience with SMS (eight or nine, over the years) the ups far outweigh the downs. I still have three that are in my regular rotation...they were the best of the bunch. Have fun with your new friend once it arrives!

You'll enjoy that pipe. I have an SMS also and it's day and night between it and a briar. Nice pick up!
