Hi there - from what I have read on here, the reason for the recent unavailability of the Peter Stokkebye luxury flakes was due to a change in ownership/blender. Has anyone tried the new production stuff? Is it the same as before? I've been thinking about ordering a 24 oz box and want to make sure that the quality has not suffered since the recent shake up. Thanks

I just got some "new batch" LBF and LNF.

Sadly I never had them before.....luckily I like the LNF.

    Glad I could help ;-)

I have some ltf & lbf both are very good. I could be mistaken but I don't think the blender has changed, Just the distributor.

Yeah.. its still being manufactured and blended by Orlik, but for whatever reason, Lane now handles distribution of the PS products in the U.S..
The laps was caused by transfer of distribution/licensing and such, and the time it took for the transfer to happen.. I read somewhere that Lane will continue the distribution the same as it was with Villager Stokkebye, the previous distributor.

Erik Stokkebye is putting out his own line now that he's gone from Villager. It's called Newminster, and I think it has some "Luxury-type" flakes. Pipesandcigars carries it now, but I haven't checked it out, yet.

Edit: I just looked them over. They are called Superior Navy Flake and Superior Round Slices. Hmmmmmm......

The write up on PipesandCigars says that Peter Stokkebye tobaccos are "produced AND distributed" by a new company. It also says the new Villager stuff under Newminster is produced by Mac Baren.

    Interesting...

I noticed that as well.. It was a article on Pipemagazine that was published at the beginning of the transition, that included an interview by a Lane Ltd. staff member.. Let me see if I can find the article.

Whoa! Lane will be distributing Orlik, WO Larson, Erinmore, Escudo, Balken Sasieni and more. According to that article, the PS line sold by Lane, will be made in the same factory, with the same recipes as always. What may change is the pricing. They only sell through wholesalers, where 1/3 of Villager Stokkebye customers bought direct. I would think the larger selling retailers were the 1/3 that bought direct, and will now have to buy from a wholesaler, which may raise retail prices to us, the buyers.

The Newminster stuff is what sounds like will be totally now. If it is produced in a different factory (Mac Baren), and new recipes, it most likely will be very different. It may still be good... but different.

    Interesting... :bing:

Im actually looking forward to trying the Newminster Flakes myself. At that price point, I'd be a fool not to at least give them a good shot into my little stash.

    There are strong similarities.

It's like saying that all Italian food is the same. It's pasta!

Orlick and Mac Baren tobaccos always have that signature taste to their blends or blends they make for others.
