Today was a good day. Received a package from PSF'er mattia76, who runs the Viking Club Pipes website. Really great guy to do business with, and his prices are more than fair. The pipes arrived in fantastic condition. Exhibit A: A new Northern Briars pipe, this one a billiard. This is an early NB, before he started grading his pipes. I think it's just damn beautiful. Exhibit B: 1962 Dunhill Shell Briar group 4 billiard, F/T Thanks to Nathan for the wonderful pipes. They both smoke incredibly well, and they're both just classy as all hell. I think the Dunhill is a slightly better smoker, but the Northern Briars has such an amazing stem. Apparently Bill Ashton-Taylor once said that Ian Walker makes the best stems in Britain, and the two that I own so far both support that claim 100%. The bit is wide, and thin, yet very substantial. It's very easy to smoke while driving, and that's especially important to me because I row my own gears, so I clench a LOT. I just love English pipes. They are so light and well-proportioned, and they tend to do a great job of combining style and substance. Hard to beat a classic billiard. I didn't get very good side-profile shots, but believe me when I say that the execution is perfect on both of these.
