Everywhere I go, there is a pipe in one pocket and a pouch of baccy in the other, they are kinda like my pants and shoes. Ever go anywhere that was supposed to be a short trip that turned into an unbearable trip, due to no toby?

Rite-Aid and a Dr. Grabow for me. Only my experience turned me into a DG smoker

I keep a Dr. Grabo and a tin of Erinmore in the glove box of my truck, just in case.

    Hi All,

    Yup, me too!

Despite always trying to make sure there's always a pipe and tobacco around and some in the car - the last time this happened I was in Glasgow and couldn't get parked near the centre so had walked into the main part of town when a swift pat of my pockets revealed that while I'd a freshly filled Zippo and my loaded tobacco pouch I'd no damned pipe.

Didn't want to walk back to the car but nowadys good tobacconist/pipe shops are rare in Glasgow. Saw one of those everything for £1.00 shops and found they had a Chinese knock off of a Falcon/Alco type. The bowl was tin lined and the pipe smoked hot but it saw me through the day.

Decided to see how long it'd last - a week later the raised section at the bottom of the humidome dropped out - but it had been any port in a storm and I'd only invested £1.00!

    Happy smoking

    Gerry

When I used to travel down to McAllen near the border with Mexico, I'd take a pipe. I flew down and drove the five hours back in a rental car. One trip I flew down with pipe, pipe nail, pipe cleaners, but no toby.

I was bummed about the five hours of boring, flat road with no pipe to smoke. I ended up finding a very nice B&M, The Tinderbox and purchased Special Blend for the first time. It is still in my rotation.

Happened to me the other day, actually; I had run out of the house in a rush, and despite grabbing pipes, cleaners, a tool, and my lighter, I didn't think to grab tobacco. Mind you, as soon as my predicament became known, I popped into the nearest gas-station for a pouch of CBW.

Now for the saddest part of my tale, not only did I pay $22.99 for 50g of CBW, but I also filled the tank at $1.213/l ($4.597/gal), when not 45mins south of me (across the line, in Washington), I could have filled up at less than $3.20/g, and saved at least $12 on the CBW. God, I love living in the land of the taxed.

About 15 years ago I went up to Maine & N.H. [ White Mtns ] for a ten day mind zone . Got off the plane in boston .. rented a car and got outta that place as fast as I could . Realized I had my 4 pipe travel w/ everything but Tobacco . Hellfire . It took 2 days to find tobacco . When I did find some my choice was Apple or Amphora Brown .... so that was easy , right ! I smoked a few pouches of Amphora while in Maine and the White Mtns . Damn good trip that started off bad . Before and since I have a pipe and tobacco no matter what . If I walk out the door ... I'm packin a pipe and pouch !

Isn't it strange - when you discover that you have no tobacco with you, the urge to smoke increases ten-fold.

I haven't been back into it long enough to develop that sort of fear, but when I do I'll comfort myself knowing that there is a nearby CVS or Walgreens that will have a corncob and some Prince Albert or some other OTC baccy.

For me, it is more of being thrust into situations where it doesn't matter if I am prepared to smoke or not -- traveling for 5+ hours with a non-smoker in our company car, long trips with mynon-smoking family, in our non-smoking vehicle, flight to a far corner somewhere only to get a non-smoking rental car and only non-smoking hotels, in a very militant non-smoking town, etc.

I regularly find myself assaulted by the non-smoking attitudes sweeping the nation. While it generally is aimed squarely at the Cigarette toking crowd, we more sophisticated types are the collateral damage on the edge. I have had several people comment on how lovely my pipe is, reminding them of some happier times or a long dead relative. Even some of my heavy "English" blends bring out smiles in people, but I am still not allowed to smoke in most places I go.

Nope -- Iowa. They passed a crappy law a few years ago now banning smoking pretty much everywhere, in the name of employee and public health. They also tied it into an indoor air pollution thing, calling the whole affair the Indoor Air Quality Act or something like that. Smoking just is not politically correct anymore, and they will do whatever they can to tax the daylights out of anyone who uses tobacco products. They are looking for ways to add fees and fines for health problems associated with smoking, real or imagined.

That's the predicament I find myself in. Oftentimes I don't even bother to bring a pipe a some toby even when Johnny Law isn't trying to cramp my style as most people these days don't have an ounce of patience and try to rush me through a bowl. Pipe smoking in my experience is a solo pastime best enjoyed not far from home.

I really wish there were exceptions to the public smoking ban - other than the casinos. I would really enjoy getting together with some like-minded individuals, have a few drinks, smoke some great tobacco, and make some friends. Apparently, unless I want to sit in a noisy, glitzy casino with several blue-haired individuals throwing their Social Security away, I can't smoke inside any "public" space.

Anyway, to get this thread back on track, there is one occasion Irecall where I had a great trip planned, got a few miles down the road, and realized I left my duffel with the pipes and tobaccos in my office. It made for a rather sullen trip, but nothing I couldn't handle. I picked up several varieties of OTC cigars that I enjoy, and still enjoyed some vitamin N and some solitude. I just didn't get that great, satisfying smoke I do with my pipes!

In the rare occasion I've done this on my way to work I'll buy a package of Backwoods. They get me buy until I reunite with my pipe.
