Why do carbonated drinks, like pepsi or coke, taste TERRIBLE if I have one after I smoked a pipe??

Fruit juice is fine, but omg, anything fizzy, and it tastes like puke for about 3 hours after I finish my pipe.

Huh, I'm going to have to try drinking a soda after a pipe to taste this horror myself...

It's a sign from God. Send all your pipes and tobacco to me, Father Pat McGroin. I will Vanquish them of all demonic spirits.

Add a couple drops of bourbon to the carbonated stuff and it will taste great.

I like that rancid puke flavor. Brings out the best in my favorite blends.

Seriously though, I really do like a Coke or a Pepsi on the rocks with my smoke. It tastes the same to me whether smoking a pipe or not.

    I would suggest the opposite:
A few drops of soda to the bourbon....
Just to take the edge off. lol:dkn:

My guess would be, and again this is a guess, is that the carbonic acid in the soda is interacting with any of the ammonia or amines which can be a byproduct of your smoke. Perhaps your choice of tobacco is on the higher side of one or both of these byproduct compounds. I've never really noticed either of these until, oddly, this morning, when I smoked a bowl of Squadron Leader for the first time. I did not taste any ammonia in the smoke itself, but the aroma coming off the pipe had a clear ammonia note. Not exactly pleasant. Also, tobacco naturally contains ammonia and this is one of the products that is sweated out during fermentation. But to the question, acids and bases tend not to play nicely together.

Hm, that's interesting, I didn't think that it only did it with some tobacco's I have. I'll have to test each one as I get to it in my rounds. Maybe its just 1 of them.

Let me know, I'm fascinated to know if I'm full of :poop: or actually hit on something.

I generally have a diet soda after a pipe because it tastes awesome to me. We have one of those SodaStream systems and all their diets are made with Splenda instead of Aspartame.
Why would you waste good bourbon like that?

Honestly I think its some chemical reaction as Bump suggested. Our taste buds can be quite peculiar.

Nor have I. I drink the stuff pretty much all day, so maybe I've become immune to these effects.

Perhaps it's a lot like drinking OJ after brushing your teeth. Never a good experience that one. Same here I suspect.

I avoid carbonated drinks after smoking for the same reason. Even worse if you have tongue bite. The raspberry iced tea at work sure tastes good after a smoke though.

Maybe your taste buds need some time to rest. Mine usually do. I drink water during and after my pipe. Probably just the aftertaste of the tobacco.
