I'd like to dip my toe in oriental blends. Having not experienced them in a true oriental mixture I'm not sure what to expect. I need suggestions on some blends to try. Also, could someone explain to me how orientals are different than English blends? Thanks.

The definition of "English blend" is, from what I've seen, broad and murky. As far as I can tell, an English blend is pretty much anything non-aromatic other than maybe the Lakelands. I would say, what you would call an oriental falls within the definition of an English blend except that the primary contents are the oriental tobaccos.

Not sure if this helps any, but like I said, the term English blend is vague and, I think, an American invention.

McClelland's Bombay Court is a fine oriental. There are many others. I think that Squadron Leader is lifted up as a shining example of the genre as well.

Dunhill's London Mixture and Peretti's Royal Blend are excellent blends and Cornell & Diehl's No. 166 Turkish is very good for blending your own mixtures.

C&D's Oriental Silk, for an oriental without latakia.

Rattrays Red Rapparee or McConnell's Oriental, for an oriental with a small amount of latakia.

GL Pease Samarra/Blackpoint/Charing Cross, for an oriental with a fairly significant amount of latakia.

Another interesting thing to try is McClelland's Syrian latakia blends. I have Rose of Latakia open currently - it really is a different tobacco from the Cyprian latakia.

I also forgot McClelland's Syrian Super Balkan.

I had a tin from 2006 that I smoked this year and it was awesome.

Went through a tin of McClelland's Classic Samsun over the summer. I was surprised at the maple-ish note it had. The longer it was open, the nuttier it got - almost like a more full-flavored burley.

All in all, a perfectly respectable smoke. Not one I plan to keep on hand, but it was good for a carefree summer fling.
