So I was at my local cigar & pipe store and started to pull out some tobacco to put in my pipe. I decided to go for an open tin of a VA I had, but I also pulled out of my stash an unopned tin of Penzance. I was ready to crack the seal, when two others said "Wait!".

"Do you know how much that is worth?" one exclaimed.

    "Ah, no," I replied.

    "About $40!," he claimed.

I put it back in my bag and decided not to open that tin. But I thought that was high. Is that an accurate rate?

A 2 ounce tin of Penzance at my local B&M is $13.30 plus tax. It's even cheaper online when it's in stock.

"In stock" is the key. I've sin tins go for that high on eBay when there's been a dry spell at the etailers. I've seen 8 oz bags go for $60-70 too. I'm more of the patient type and waited until a couple of 8 oz bags were available for $33.

That's what I thought. It's 5 years old, but couldn't believe it was that much. I should have offered a deal to them!

A 5 year old tin is worth more than a new tin...

Like with all things, it is worth what someone is willing to pay. 5 year old tins can get as much as 40, but normally closer to 30.

But isn't normal markup generally about a dollar or so per year? 5 years is old-er, but not exactly vintage....

A tin of Penzance is a nice thing to have. It's even nicer to smoke. And it's really not worth 40 bucks......

An 8oz bag might get 40 bucks when the stuff is scarce, or in a b&m....but it's not WORTH more than 30

I'd either continue saving it to smoke it later, or smoke it now but that's just me.

You can always try to buy more when it's back in stock. It's not that hard, just sign up for notification alerts on check with people on here every so often. I was able to score an 8oz bag a week or 2 ago for 30$ish

    Plus, lat blends tend to
    mellow with age, so it
    depends on where your
    tastes lie when cellaring
    this type of blend. IMHO

If you're intending to smoke the tin then the price someone else would pay for it is irrelevant - smoke it! If you're going to sell it then sell it, but if you almost cracked it open I'd guess your intention was more in line with the former.

I agree with the suggestion to smoke it - you can't taste it in the tin ;)

So you've been carrying around this tin for five years? That's impressive. I say smoke it. Enjoy it.

Well, most of my tobacco is five years old or older. I don't smoke too much (subjective). I purchased a bunch of tins 5 years ago and I'm still going through them. All the talk around Penzance and I thought about smoking my tin. Well, I broke out some Odessey for my Lat fix (I'm a VA smoker primarily) instead. Maybe in another 5 years I'll smoke my Penzance! Ah, just kidding, maybe next year!

Could always sell it and use that money to buy more Penzance (when its available).
