My father in law, out of the blue, emailed me and asked him to pick out a pipe. He smokes cigarettes and is trying to quit (already recommended CH to him....so there ya go DGE). He wants a pipe with these parameters.....

    1. Black
    2. Rugged
    3. Billiard or very similar shape
    4. Short (I recommended http://www.cupojoes.com/cgi-bin/spgm?dpt=W&srch=DW&item=vikclb16 ) and he said it was too long.
    5. Under $50.
    6. Not a cob (I know, I know....he just thinks they're cheap).
    7. Straight

    Any ideas?

I think $50 is pushing his price point as it is. And I forgot to mention he wants a straight one.

For some reason, most of the black finished pipes I've seen tend to be in a bit higher price range. I'll check some of my bookmarks when I get home, but I used the pipe finder at SP and couldn't come up with a straight, short, black pipe for under $100.

I noticed the same thing. Kind of weird when you think about it. What could be simpler than that??

Does he want a smooth or textured. If he prefers textured then buy him a Dr. Grabow Duke or Grand Duke, send it to me and I will do the all black ruff rustification on it and send it back to you. Gratis of course.

He can't go wrong with a Dr. G for his first pipe.

I may give that one a whirl, but I think he is looking for a really short pipe. He said something about watching the Hatfield and McCoy series and noticing short pipe someone had on there. I've not seen it so I can't say.

Explain to him that the shorter the pipe the hotter the smoke. I have tried that and won't try it again.

Sorry, just re-read and realized my link above doesn't fit the "black" criteria.

Any pipe can be made black, so don't let that limit your search.

Stanwell Mojo to address his request for rugged (but it is out of his price range).
Best bet: buy a Dr. G or Kaywoodie and dye it black yourself.

These Stonehavens are about 4 inches long but make for a really nice smoker once they're broken in properly.

These Rangers are just about 4 inches and also smoke very well.

The standard Falcon is about 6 inches long - this is one of the "modern" matt-black bowls, Dover it looks like.

Or, if he doesn't mind cleaning an estate

Another standard length, but this one's a Hunter - i.e. anaodised all black (at least I think it's a Hunter. It might be an Extra, which are anodised a dark brown colour. My eyes ain't what they used to be.). These Falcons are super easy to clean and the bowl looks to be in servicable condition. Just give it a good ream and the salt & alcohol treatment and it'll be good to go.

I've no idea what constitutes "rugged" in terms of a pipe. Sounds to me like your father-in-law may be compensating just a wee bit there. For $20 I'de tell him to pick up the Stonehaven personally. ;) :puffy:

Except for the really short part, there are quite a few KW at the WV store that fit the bill
