I've been thinking about a Grabow Omega with the military bit.

I know many of you out there are quite fond of the antique/estate/older grabows, but I would like a brand new one.

For those of you out there experienced with the new ones, what is the stem made of? is it plastic like the cheaper grabows? is the stem/mouthpiece crummy and easily broken like the cheaper grabows?

All the newer Grabow Omega's I've seen have the cheaper plastic like stem.

I think I have a newer rusticated Dr Grabow Omega. I got it as an estate pipe. I can't say for sure what it is made of but the stem was oxidized like a vulcanite stem would be.
The military bit works for me just as one on my Peterson does. At first glance the Grabow looks like my Peterson. Get the rusticated version as the flaws in the finish will be less obvious. The Omega is a very good pipe.
I have other Grabow pipes with the plastic stem and they work and smoke very well.

Pretty sure the new ones are plastic. I ordered a replacement stem for mine a while back and it's plastic. Not premium, obviously, but I don't really mind it. My Omega is a good smoker, but it took some break-in.

My Omega is my current go-to pipe for my evenings. So far it hasn't disappointed, but admittedly, I'm a greenhorn at all this.

How do you order? The Dr. G company site is a bit sparse. Didn't see a store there.

    Dumb question:
    I have a Grabow Omega....
How do I know if it's a newer one or older one?

I have a Grabow Omega that I purchased new this year. The stem is plastic and has the P lip. This Omega is one of my favorites, and smokes very well.

I have an older Omega with a vulcanite stem. Found it at a flea market for $3. I removed the lacquer finish and the wood is decent, great pipe.

The one I have has Dr Grabow over Omega stamped on one side of the shank and Imported Briar stamped on the other side. It has an aluminum ferrule that seems to be attached to the wood rather than applied over it like on a Peterson. The usual white spade mark is on the P-lip style stem.

Really? I think all Omegas have always had P-lips. Well, the big chunky Grabow version of a P-lip, anyway. Maybe you have a replacement stem.

Mine's a fake P-lip. Rather than the hole coming up through the top, it comes straight out through the back.
    Kind of strange, actually.

Most of the P-lip knock offs i've seen have been that way. The only one I have that is identical to a Peterson in design is a Vauen.

I'm gonna' take all the grief for Grabow about their pipes. My due..
    Omega is a love/hate pipe.
How do you tell the age?? If it is vulcanite, its pre- 1978. ABS plastic will be after.
A tip........... have you considered sanding/cutting off the Grabow "P" back to the bite? I use a Dremel.
An old Grabow does that to all of his Omega's. Makes them work especially well for him.... ted
