I bought this pipe out of impulse, sort of. I've been smoking my bent briar way too much and want to start getting a rotation going. Went into a pretty nice pipe shop in Rome just to 'snoop around' and ended up making a purchase.

Haven't smoked it yet. Bought some Borkum Riff "Original" per the recommendation of the guy who sold it to me. I'm very new to pipe smoking, but very proud of this purchase.

    What do you think?

It's a Savineli 313 shape and says Toscana on the side.

Wow! Very close to a Pete 408, one of my favorite shapes.

Thanks, guys. I'm curious, though... there is a wooden filter in it when I take it apart. Do I need to buy refills or would the pipe smoke fine without filters? Is this personal preference?

I just looked that up on google. Beautiful pipe. I was looking at sandblasted ones as well, but somehow this one just looked right...

btw....I do use the balsa filters, as they absorb a lot of residuals, without affecting the smoke....but, you need to replace the filter with each use.

Interesting. I may have to go back and purchase some more of those... They're not expensive, only a few euros. Should have bought them when I was there.

Very nice pipe! I love my Savinelli, and I do use the filter, but I don't always replace it after every use, but at least after a couple or so. Congrats on your acquisition!

Try it with the balsa filter and without. do what tastes best for you. You shouldn't give a hoot which way I do it.

It has a reputation as being a cheap toby that burns hot and tastes terrible, but if you get enjoyment out of it go for it. That is what smoking a pipe is all about, enjoying yourself and relaxing.

It became available in the U.S. in the early seventies at about the time I started smoking pipes. It was a great blend then but it has slipped in quality since then. It is the butt of many jokes but, IMO, it's still better than a lot of popular blends.

I get that a lot. I'm an engineer and I admit I have no sense of taste. Because I'm a rude, crude, socially unacceptable red neck, I can't pretend to like Captain Black, MacB's Symphony and Orlik Golden Slices or deny that I used to smoke BR until recently.
