Are they a needed item?. I got some but they plug up fast. Can you smoke without them? What is your recommendation? Its seems a dumb question but I dunno.:msty:

Screens are for that green tobaccy you used to get from shady dudes at Phish shows. You don't need them for what we do here.

Johnny D is right. Screens are not for pipe tobacco.

Did the smoke shop smell strongly of incense and have a lot of blacklight posters? Cuz that's the wrong type of smoke shop.

Yeah, booze shops do that, too. Ah well, live and learn. The fact that I knew their purpose is more an indictment of my past behaviour than an exposure of your ignorance. :D

I stay away from any tobacco shop that sells glass pipes and other paraphanelia. In my experience these people know next to nothing about tobacco. The "briar" pipes that these places usually carry are cheap wood pipes made in Asian factories, and they are not suitable for pipe tobacco.

If there is not a dedicated pipe shop near you, try to find a cigar shop. These guys actually do have knowledge about tobacco and most of them carry some pipe tobacco.

Screens are not really needed for regular pipe smoking.

Screens are nice for pipe smoking... as in when you're sitting in your screened-in porch during nice weather, puffing contentedly.

    Otherwise, no.

Don't worry, I made the same mistake when I first started. I bought a cob with screen off Ebay. Live and learn.
