I've been traveling a lot for work lately so perhaps this is my addled brain, but walking out for lunch today in Brooklyn, NY I saw a small knot of gentlemen smoking cigars. One of them had a the short nub of a cigar stuffed into a cob pipe and was smoking it that way.

Needless to say I gave it a bit of a double take, is this common or some kind of NY peculiarity? No one else seemed to be doing it in the group, but then they also didn't seem to think it odd.

I've seen this done in a briar before, so why not a cob too? I would think a cigar holder would be more appropriate in a social setting or out in public.

I've done it, and before I posted my idea to Cigar Pass (back when I posted a lot there) I thought I'd invented it.

Thing is, you can control the combustion of the cigar so much better with a pipe, and it makes for an excellent smoke. The best way to truly experience a cigar is to stuff it into a pipe that fits it well and go for it.
It will last hours more than usual as well.

So, you stick the whole thing in, or cut it into sections?

It's actually a very common practice to "nub" a cigar out of a pipe. When the cigar gets too hot to hold between fingers, but too good to put down...a pipe fixes that problem quite easily

I thought that's what toothpicks were for? That is what they use at my local cigar lounge.

with no pipe on hand, a toothpick will work just fine, but is still more limiting than a pipe

Didn't Winston Churchill's gardener get his nubs to smoke in his pipe?

I told one of my buddies to do that one time. While punching the cigar, the wrapper started coming undone.

I told him to stick it in his pipe and smoke it. That's now become his cigar pipe.

I was serious with my question :(

Do you sit there with a full-length cigar sticking out of your pipe, or cut it down bit by bit?

I've never seen or heard about anyone doing this before. I have been wondering about cutting up the one cigar I still like and smoking bits of it in a pipe... now I think I'll have to give it a go! ;)

    That must look rather comical.

I've done this with a full length cigar a couple of times...just as an experiment. Smoked good but a bit clumsy. I will "nub" a cigar though, especially if it's really tasting good...I can smoke it right down, almost to ash. Waste not, want not.

I've got some semi-decent Hondurans so I might try chopping off the end of one and stuffing it in a pipe, just as an experiment.

You mean there are still places where it's legal to smoke in NYC?

...you know, using a "roach clip" for a stogie never even occured to me...
My apartment, for one. I'd sooner smoke outside, but you're not supposed to smoke in parks and I'd miss my TV and internet.

There are also a few cigar lounges around; I live nearby one and visit it occasionally. I like the camaraderie, but don't care for the extra $10 a stick it costs me. (And I don't care for their house sticks.)

Are there enough of us to mount an effective rebellion? Sadly, no.
