I'm looking at estate pipes and one seller wrote that there was some spider webbing on the bowl, any idea what this means visually, structurally and .... smokally?

It was a "hot-spot" where the coals were well on their way to a burn thru in the bowl. It's a weak area now and can be mudded over or filled in but best is to smoke cool (as cool as you can, so even char, gentle even light and easy does it sippin') may render a cake forming over the area. Usually can be found at the bottom around and just above the draft hole.

Would the spidering have an effect on the exterior part of the bowl?

Eventually yes if it's deep and continues or already has marked the outer beauty. It'll appear as a stain/darkened area.

Way too much power and corresponding responsibility for me to buy this pipe...

I'm jotting down "smokally" for future use. Nicely done.

My generation has another, more seedy translation of spiderwebbing. Do not want.

It was exposed to excessive heat, not a pipe you want.

Lead me not into temptation. Now I had to go and look it up. Sorry I did that.

Ugh, I looked as well. I did like the June 24th urban dictionary expression of the day "curb shame" ---> "Embarrassment at waiting on the curb obediently as other pedestrians ignore the "don't walk" signal in the absence of traffic."

Aye someone else bought it anyways, a gorgeous Ashton poker with nice rusticated finish. Ashton does that effect particularly well :( I think i would have risked it in the end but then fate stepped in.
