    What a great combination.

I ordered some tobacco a week or two ago and while I was putting it together I threw in a MM Pony Express cob. They're ridiculously cheap at something like 3 bucks. I was on my out to mow my lawn this morning so I filled up the new cob Sugar Barrel and went on my way. That had to have been one of the most pleasant smokes I've had in the short time I've been pipe smoking. And honestly, I think the key was...I wasn't thinking about it.

Sugar Barrel is just so darn easy to smoke. It loads easy. It lights easy. It smokes easy. And it tastes great. If I tamped it at all I don't remember doing it. Finally I stopped to relight because I thought it had gone out and realized there was nothing left but ash. If I had had my pouch on the lawn mower with me I would've reloaded and had another bowl.

The Pony Express is a nice little cob too. Nice and light and makes a great clencher for when you need both hands. At $3 you can't beat it. I'm going to throw a couple more in the next time I order.

I might actually be getting the hang of this.

Seriously?! Where? I was just in Mount Airy on Saturday performing a wedding at the Legion Hall. I have a new tub that I just cracked open today but it'll be nice to have local options.

Twin Arch shopping center. The road by the carnival grounds. Right by the barber shop is Tobacco Shack.
I wouldn't call Emmitsburg to Mt. Airy as "local".

I broke a Legend in with Sugar Barrel last summer. It worked a treat...although, it ghosted a bit...and I got tired of Sugar Barrel.

I consider it local if it's still in Frederick County. :)

I have always had an interest in Sugar Barrel!
What does it taste like? With which tobacco(s) does it compare, nicotine wise?

Hey there Tom. I'm not sure I'm the best one to be answering this for you. I'm pretty new to all this and I don't have a great deal of experience or a well developed palate for tobaccos. I would say that it is similar to Carter Hall in it's straight forward "just a good smoke" simplicity. They're both described as being Burley/Virginia. Tobacco Reviews says the Sugar Barrel is ribbon cut but I don't think that's right. It looks cube cut to me. It also has a more distinct touch of sweet than CH which I like. It's not overpowering but it's there.

Yeah, that's where I got mine too. Now, between the place in Mt. Airy and the one I heard about the other day in Charles Town, WV I can take a little ride and pick some up.

Hey, I have an idea. Us locals here to the Maryland area should have a get-together in Charles Town, WV. We can hit that tobacco shop I heard about, then head over to the Track/Casino.

Sugar Barrel in a cob is a great 'doing something' combination. Lets me focus on whatever I'm doing rather than on smoking and still have a great tasting bowl.

It's gotta be right on the line. Close enough for government work.

The Charlestown place came up courtesy of one of our new members in this thread:
    http://pipesmokersforum.com/community/threads/kid-in-a-candy-store.28579/

He sent me the name and address:
    http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-smoking-head-charles-town-2

I would've mistaken it for a head shop too and probably not bothered going in. So, am I allowed in Mt. Airy now?

Quite the contrary, your description is great, TWolf!
I love CH. If it has a little more sweetness to it, then I want to try it.
    Thank you!

To me, SB tastes kinda like Carter Hall, but with a brown-sugary flavor instead of figgy. As soon as I had some I knew I had to smoke it in a cob.
