    hi guys,

So in my tobacco theres light brown long strands of tobacco and then theres very dark black small to medium pieces. How can i know what type of tobacco that im looking at? is there a difference between virginian leaves and others?

I think latakia and perique (black) are the only tobaccos that are consistent in color. Burleys, Virginias and Orientals differ, depending on the sub-type. In other words, you can't usually tell a tobacco from its color.

Even the best minds in the pipe world can't pick them out strictly by color. I was reading a story about the recent Balkan Sobranie throwdown at last year's Chicago Pipe Show, and one of the blenders was trying to reverse-engineer the stuff from an old sample, and even after separating the leaves by color, they had to burn little bits of each to determine by smell what they were.
