I've recently purchased some vulcanized rubber pipe stems and I'm wondering what form of heating the stems is best when forming the bend? I'm thinking a small butane torch would work but I've been wrong on a few of my past ideas and I thought this would be the best place for tips and advice.

I have found a heat gun to work best. Keep the piece moving, be careful not to burn it, it will easily bend when ready, place it in cold water to set the bend.

I use a heat gun on the highest setting. Moving the stem back and forth about 1" from the source requires 3-5 minutes to get it up to temperature, depending on the thickness. Place the heat over the thickest part of the stem. When it's ready to bend it will do so easily - little to no force required.
