    For someone.

I picked up a 2010 Dunhill not long ago. It is very gently used. It sat in a pipeshop for two years and then was "purchased" by the guy that runs the place (*a good friend of mine). He kept it for a couple months, smoked it handful of times, and gave it to me for some restoration work.

So now I have it. It's probably the closest I'll ever come to owning a new Dunhill.

And it occurs to me that this pipe is someone's birth year pipe.
    Someone I don't know.
    And maybe never will know.

To them, it'll just be THEIRS.
It will be their birthyear Dunhill, found in miraculously good shape for such an old pipe, and a damn fine smoker to boot. I imagine how happy they'll be when they find it, how much they'll enjoy those first few bowls, and how much time they'll spend with the pipe learning to appreciate it.

And that's pretty cool. I'm the old dead guy this time.

    Cheers.

You folks are hopeless. Not one of you rotten lot are getting this pipe.
Unless you're 3. And then you really shouldn't be here.

A while back I postulated the idea of buying a new Dunhill when a new addition to the family arrives... hopefully some day it could be passed on as a birth year pipe. I don't think the thread got much traction, though.

That's an absolutely lovely pipe, by the way. Is the blast pretty well mirrored on the opposite side?

That is a VERY beautiful Dunhill. The grain, and stem are stunning in your picture. Birthyear, or not--fella I would have a hard time not wanting to add that to the collection.

Ah, PSF, where giving pipes to three year olds is not only accepted, it's encouraged.

Great looking pipe there Spill. I have a nephew who was born in 2010; maybe I could get it for him. It'll be like a trust fund, you know, I'll safeguard it and manage it judiciously until he turns 18, at which point I will give him wise advice on how to use it and avoid squandering it. :)

That pipes a beaut, and that's a really nice sentiment Spill.

I wonder which dead guy's pipe I've got for my Birth Year, what he did, and how he came by the pipe. Something to ponder tomorrow afternoon, with a pipeful.
