Breezewood Pipes

    I saw a mention of Breezewood pipes in another thread and have a little info to share. Breezewood was an answer to the briar shortage of WWII. They were made of mountain Laurel supposedly from the Carolinas. I have a straight apple with a glass inner tube. Great smoking pipe. Nice enough to look at without much in the way of grain.

    Thank you! I knew about the war shortages and use of Mtn. Laurel, but had never had a specific brand attached....one more piece in the puzzle!

    That's the company that made the 1941 Welly looking thing in my avatar pic. Has the P-lip as well. Also was ingraved 12-25-41. Smokes decent enough but can get wet easy.

    The roots and berries and such of the tree are reputed to be poisonous. The peocess of making pipes out of the wood that may have some assorted bad thoughts of, was short lived.

    Yep the laurel is poisonous. Supposedly Native Americans of old used the leaves to commit suicide. Ive gotta find myself one of those pipes. Thanks for the photo.
