I've done that once or twice myself in the early years of cob smoking... :D

I've had tubs of CH that smoked very wet despite feeling dry to the touch. Sometimes it's just dumb luck. And at the risk of being ponderous, everyone would be better served by getting a hardwood-bottomed cob! No problems, no arguments, no debates over tobaccos or technique.

In my experience, the hardwood plug seems to impart an off taste to the smoke as I get close to the bottom of the bowl that I don't get this with the pith bottom cobs, that's why I prefer the pith bottom cobs, a sweeter smoke for me! :ohyh:

I've had MM soft tails start to feel mushy. Just don't poke it. Let some cake build up on the bottom and enjoy.

I once tried to dry out a cob I'd dropped in a puddle by the bowl in the oven...and promptly forgetting about it. When I smelled something like burnt popcorn it was too late. It wasn't mushy, but hard as a rock and baked to a crisp!
