    Hi All,

My son the dedicated cigarette smoker who knows little about pipes is posted to Denmark and wants to get me a Danish Freehand for Christmas. I've had a look through various websites and there certainly seems to be a lot of nice looking pipes about. I've no knowledge of these whatsoever.

Anyone got experience; anyone want to tell me the best makers?

    Thanks in advance

    Gerry

This week I had great day in Copenhagen with the sole purpose of sourcing tobaccho and explore the beer and food. If at all interested and in the capital, he should visit the Danish pipeshop on the main shopping street and also Paul Olsen (my own blend)near the Illum mall. They both have a selection of pipes and offered splendid service.

I'm an absolute beginner in pipes so I can't judge who's the best but here are a few well reputed danish makers.

    Tom eltang makes great pipes

    So does Poul Winslöw
    http://www.winslow-pipes.com/
My favourite is perhaps Peter Heding
    http://www.hedingpipes.com/
    Hans Nielsen
    http://www.danishpipemakers.com/makers/former/index.shtml

    I just found this site:
    http://www.danishpipemakers.com/makerindex.html

No doubt you will find something to your liking in Denmark. It is hard not to. :jawdrop:

Gerry, you lucky dog! Whatever you wind up with, I'm sure you will post pics for us to envy and enjoy.

Bjarne may no longer be with us, but if you are lucky, you may be able to still find one of his handmades in a shop. They are my favorite Danish made pipes. I have one that I love.

Eric Nording makes a great pipe, but prices vary from his shop from modest to pretty expensive.

Neerup also makes a great pipe for a medium price. I have two that I really enjoy.

If I got a chance, I'd probably look for a pipe from a maker that wasn't easy to find outside of the country.

Stanwell makes great pipes as does Tom Eltang. Of course, there's always

Gerry, check out this article on the late Preben Holm, you would be really fortunate if you could snag one of his pipes!

Gotcha Dondi - you're always on the ball and spot on with your info!

Also thanks Guys - this is a new field for me altogether; I've had a look at the main pipe shops' in Copenhagen's Websites and much of the stuff looks good and cheaper than I thought it would be, but at this stage don't know enough to know what's quality and what's basket,

    Thanks again

    Gerry

Unless I’m mistaken, the Stanwell factory is still located in Borup, just outside of Copenhagen.

Stanwell anounced a while back that they were going to move production to Italy...not sure if that's taken place yet though.

Neerup makes a good Danish pipe, reasonably priced too.

Actually, if you poke around the european sites, the newer Stanwell offerings look really, really good. I would almost say that they are trying to focus on the mid-grade (150+) pipe rather than being on the super affordable end.

Ah, helloooo, I hear there's this new guy named Ivarsson who may turn into something. Okay, so he was born in Sweden, but I'm still counting him.
