Since taking up the pipe, I've been experimenting with OTC brands, and at first I tried choosing based on the blend's description, and that didn't go too far, then I basically bought blindly, and after about 10 OTC blends, I have my top three choices.

My first like was Paladin Black Cherry, I loved the room note, but it bit me often, but after a little drying, I've reduced this by over half.

My second like was Carter Hall, which seemed smooth as silk to me, and is still my prefered choice in my MM mini at work.

My new favorite being: Captain Black white label, it has a room note my wife even enjoys, it hasn't bit me yet, and is easy for me(the apprentice) to keep lit.

I can't wait to try the more "premium blends", but with no smoke shops close to me, and for some reason, the high S&H charges, I'll hace to stick to the CBW until my travels find me some more experiments.

Can someone point me to some blends that are similar to CBW?

    thanks,

Lane 1Q is like CBW. CBW is so damn expensive! Its available everywhere which is nice but the price is awful. I would smoke it more if it was priced like CH or PA. If you have a Walgreens near you I recently discovered the Burley and Black and Black Cavendish there. But are $15 for a pound which is like 2 pouches of CBW and they are both surprisingly good!

Sadly, my podunk town has no Walgreens, but the local tobacco outlet has bulk toby for around $35 per lb. I just hate the idea of puting money down on a product I may not like...though that is the nature of the beast, lol. I'm picking up CBW for $5.05 a pouch which I don't mind at all.

Perhaps after the winter months(heavy into reloading ammunition), I can experiment with the bulk bags. Thanks for the info.

I understood Lane RLP-6 is an exact match to CBW but without the "goopy"-ness (PG, etc) of CBW.

I could very well be wrong........

    Hi All,

I'm fond of Captain Black's Gold - but I'm not sure of its price normally - a pal gets it off a Reservation near to him where he doesn't pay tax on it, and we trade.

I find it tastes like Lanes but has a bit more body to it and I've never had tongue bite with it,

    Best to all

I live close to a reservation as well, but after a visit last summer, they charge tax as well. I don't know if its a permanant thing, but I'll still enjoy the air conditioned casino during the day, and the warm air on Kinzua dam at night.

This stuff is great ! http://wvsmokeshop.com/centuryz-50blackcordial.aspx ... this site offers many blends from 1oz upwards to 5 lbs . It's a good way to try alot of stuff without tossing away a bunch of money . The link I put up there reminds me of CB though I think it's better ... and cheaper . They have high grade tobacco to sample [ 1 oz ] as well .. example PS Bullseye , MB Golden Extra and the like . For 15 bucks you could try a bunch of stuff ... alot of the 1 oz samples are $ 1.79

I heartily recommend either Lane 1Q or RLP-6 as decent replacements. You'll be happy with both, and they're cheap enough to bulk up on if you really like them.

But anyway if you like the drug store blends i smoke one almost every day its Tobacco Galleria Blue Note and i totally love this stuff, if you can get it where you are i would recommend giving it a shot.

    Hi All,

Haven't had the White, Evil, only the Gold. To me the Gold has a slightly sweet almost honeyed note but it's not excessive and doesn't cloy. The room note, again to me, was very similar to Lanes - perhaps just a tad sweeter? Where I found a difference though was in the "body" of the smoke.

Wines can "drink thin" if they are out of balance/have too little alcohol; I find some kinds of tobacco while excellent in taste and burning qualities just seem to need that little extra something if they are to provide a satisfactory smoke. I personally keep some basic light blending virginia on hand to bulk these types of tobacco up a bit.

I add that virginia to Lanes; I don't find I have to do the same with Captain Black Gold....but as I always say - "It could be just me!"

    Best as ever

    Welcome to the forum Puma!!
.. From what I've read Lane RLP-6 is what Captain Black should be without the goop. I've ordered some but, still haven't smoked it.
Now after reading some of the responses I am going to go for Gold and might even try the Galleria too.

    Cheers!

    I always thought that 1Q ~ CB White, RLP-6 ~ CB Gold.

    But whatever. Smoke 'em all!

I try to smoke as many tobaccos as I can, and I'm on a budget as well, but fortunately I have only smoked one tobacco I just can't tolerate (and that was a free sample from a buddy). And I imagine that if you got into something you couldn't stand, there would be someone on here who would trade with you.

You should look into some free samples. I know there are a couple places on the web that will send you some free samples. I have a tin of Altadis Maple Street waiting to be opened and I supposedly have another sample in the mail.

That link is for a blender who will send you a free sample based on what your current favorites are. I haven't got mine yet so I can't vouch for it. But free is free...

Since I discovered Carter Hall it's become my fall-back reliable bowl to clear my palette and get me back on track after a few bowls of aromatics. It's like pressing the reset button. OTCs are underrated. They don't supply a sublime smoke, there are other factors involved for that, but they lay the groundwork and remind us why we started smoking in the first place.

    Cheers,
    WK

I agree with that, I tried L1 but RLP6 is better. Too bad the old ladie doesn't like the room note! :growl:

But she doesn't mind a bit when I smoke Miner's Blend or SG Scotch Cut Mixture... or MacB Vanilla Creme... or Frog Morton on the Bayou...

It's weird, the blends that she's not supposed to like she loves. :dunno:

The best recommendation any retailer can ask for.
