Well my latest 2 eBay cleanup projects came in. They are both Pre Republic Peterson pipes. The smaller is from the Irish Free State era. Let the cleaning begin.

For those other eBay buyers out there, this was from the Mike Leverette estate auctions from the weekend.

Finding them is usually not as difficult as the price we are willing to pay for them.
    Congrats!:th1:

I actually got a great deal on them. $60 for both. Thanks.

Beautiful pipes. Are they system pipes?

They aren't systems. Just have the p-lip stems. Thanks.

Nice pipes, and a 'split P' pipe too!

Split P pipe? That's a new one on me. What is that? Thanks.

Nice pickup - I was following several of the bulldogs from Mike's collection but didn't pull the trigger on any.

The pipe on the right has the older "P" in the logo. It has the forked tail at the bottom. It's another dating guideline for Petes. It was used before the early 1930's. You said it was an Irish Free State which would be approximately 1922-1937, so it's consistent.

"The "Made in Ireland" block format (above) can be another headache in dating Peterson pipes since this stamp was used in the late Patent Era as well as the late 1940s. So for a guide we must take into consideration the style of lettering Peterson used on their pipes. From the start of the Patent Era until somewhere in the early 1930s, Peterson used the "Old Style" lettering that used a forked tail "P" in Peterson."

No problem. I have the Pete bug myself and have spent a fair amount of time looking into dating them. This is a great place for Peterson enthusiasts:

I'm fascinated by the dating of pipes. Was doing Petes for awhile but just got more expensive than I wanted to pay. Then I got into Kaywoodies!

At first I was a bit skeptical about it but after the first use of one, I'm hooked. They clench so much nicer than a fishtail.

Thanks. The one on the left is probably the more practical pipe. It is quite a bit larger. I really like the nickel band on it myself.

So I just smoked the one on the left and it was excellent. Tomorrow I break in the Free State. I can't wait.
