Disclaimer: I wanted a pipe that was close to the one in the movie, but more to the time frame and the region. So, I made one that I thought looked close but had a one piece design. Made it from Hickory which is abundant in the area. This I know for a fact, my rear end will attest that Momma new where at least half of them were! So as we all know...no pics, never happened!...

not bad looking, but nice pipe!

    Handsome Devil, and nice pipe!

    One pc design

Got some nice grain...took awhile to get the stain correct

Didn't give it a real smooth sanding, wanted it to look like a regular feller's pipe.
Once a year we have a Northern Aggression Reenactment just right up the road from the house. This will be the pipe I'll be smoking this year when I go up there to watch.
Got some CH in it right now, seems to smoke good.
    Any comments, suggestions, snickers?

Since the airing of the show I've seen several attempts at re-creating Devil's pipe. Some good some not.
I think you nailed it Basil, great bit of work there!

Nice job Basil... I give you huge points for a briar bit. I wouldn't want to make that pipe ;-)

    Here's mine (to be):

I'm going with a 30degree bowl cant. To give some perspective, that bit is just about 2 inches long. Tenon is 1/4 inch. I didn't want briar in my mouth and am hoping it'll look "right" when clenched... I'll shave down the rim to lean at the angle of the bowl.

Yep, the pipe in the show actually used a bit. Had seen some pipes that reenacters used, and they were all one pc designs, so thats the route I went. Really would have prefered a bit, but wanted it more time period.

I love that pipe in the show. Did he smoke two pipes? The one I noticed the most had a shank that looked like a hollow twig and it look like it would be the most comfy clencher. I would imagine that would be hard to recreate.

Good work, Basil, but you're going to have to char that rim up a bit then rough it up some more so it'll look reeaall period.

LoL, been working on those very same things today! Been running Carter Hall thru it most of the day. Hickory seems to smoke real nice, doesn't seem to get too warm even when I "hot box" it. The all wood stem sure takes a heap of getting used to! And as for taking orders, lol, got one to make for a friend of mine, then might have enough wood seasoned for a couple more. But honestly, unless your into reenactments, I'd highly recommend going with a real short stem for comfort.
