I recently purchased a new pipe and I'm wondering if it is Briar or Meerschaum. I only have reason to believe that it may be a Meerschaum because of a picture that I saw... so a stupid reason. My friend said that he believes it is almost certainly Briar. We're looking for more opinions and figure that someone here will know absolutely. The brand is Bennington.
On another note, it's a fantastic pipe and I love it very much!

Hard to judge from just a picture, but everything I can see points to it being a briar. You could send it me for a more minute inspection.

ok, so it seems that it might be a unanimous "Briar" answer.
    Thanks!

Told you. When you said it was heavy, that gave it away.

I love the shape of the bowl. Would make a nice churchwarden.

That's a good idea. Perhaps one day I'll get a longer stem to cycle in and out of it.

I'm genuinely interested, are there Meerschaums that look like that? I've never seen one even remotely close looking to that. African Meers generally have a different texture and color, and obviously regular meers don't. Did you see this picture online, and could you link it?

I'm not a betting man, but if I was, I would put all of my pipes and tobacco on that beautiful pipe being Briar. That being said, does it matter? It could be made of tire rubber, but if it smokes good, I'm not sure I'd care. :)

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle, I've never seen anything like that. The Pioneer and Carey Meerschaums really do have a unique look. I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference up close. That is fascinating. I wonder if it is more durable then your average Meers?

This particular one is African meerschaum, so yes, it's tougher than a Turkish meerschaum.
I happen to have a Turk Carey too....

Beautiful pipe! One day I'll set foot in the Meer ocean, until then I'm content to dig on all the great pics around here. Also good to know about African Meer, I think I'd be more inclined to by African over Turk just for the durability factor.
