I know this has been discussed before. I just cracked open a tin of Penzance and it has white spots all over it. Hard to tell if its bloom or mold. Its white almost powder like, not fuzzy. Does not smell bad, but the thought is always there. Just wondering if anyone else has had a tin like this before.

It's good nice and smooth. The Virginias in it are real sweet so I'm pretty sure it was just spots from age. No mold taste.

Weird, isn't it? It seems to be a Penzance thing. After I noticed it on my most recent batch I kept a close eye. It never spread or got fuzzy or anything. If it were really mold I'm pretty sure it would continue to grow. I've also never noticed any off smells or tastes from it. I'm pretty sure it's just a byproduct of the way they manufacture and age it. I agree that it remains sort of disconcerting, though.

Disconcerting? HN Kiowa, that is what you want! It will have more with more age if properly cellared

Sugar or mold, when you pay cash money, you smoke it. My .02...(If your pupils dilate unevenly, just take a break, is all).

It's already been put in the jar with a new seal and put to bed.

Yeah, it's darn good stuff. I'd never been enough of a cellarer to have such incredible bloom before. I'd always associated aged sugarization with a finer sparkly dusting all over the leaf. This was much more dramatic and sort of patchy/spotty like TxPipesmoker's.

Every tin of Penzance i've ever opened (two or three, now...) has had this. It's spotty nature I assumed was due to some casing on one of the component leafs drying up, leaving a powdery residue. I figure too that if it was bloom it would be more uniform, and more importantly, would be in more aged tins than mine.

What is throwing me is I don't think I recall seeing this phenomenon on bulk Penzance. My memory might be off, though.

Me too! I get sugar in my tins but not in my bulk. I've got my bulk in quart jars so I see everything that's going on. What I do see in my bulk is a change in color. My Penzance in bulk is almost black. That's got to be good. Right?

I just got a hold of some Penzance for the first time last week, ordered an 8 oz bag, sealed. It came in looking just like this, and although I was worried at first, boy that's some tasty stuff, smoked a bowl for breakfast this morning!

    Enjoy!

A tin I got recently (my first, so I have no frame of reference) looks at least this speckled with white stuff. I was assured by the party from whom it came that it is sugar, and I have no reason to doubt it. Tastes great and hasn't killed me yet. :thu:
