After joining the other day I finally got all my ducks in a row, finished a great meal, packed my first bowl, poured a sniff of Johnny Walker Black, sat down on my front porch and lit my very first pipe.... and to say it was awesome would be a serious understatement.....
I started off ordering a supposed "all wood" pipe off ebay and got some chinese POS that isnt fit for blowing bubbles.
I mean Im no expert but what is this stuff....
it looked and smelled kinda like asphalt, and then theres this
    [IMG]
So back into the box for return shipping then I returned to "The Tinder Box" and bought this...
It's a Carolina Briar made for Tinder Box retail $29.95 . I packed it up

and enjoyed the best smoke ever... I know my bowl looks a lil under packed but i didnt wanna over do it on the first try but Ill be packing it to the top from now on. I had a hard time keeping it lit but I figure that will come with experience. The tobacco was (as you can see) Reserve 1928 from the Tinder Box. A blend of red, orange, and flake virginias with a touch of Burley. Ive only smoked cigars in the past but this blend was as smooth or smoother than some of the finer cigars I've smoked. Also the aroma was definitely more pleasing. All in all I am very pleased with my choice.... I will say Im still gonna look for other blends, this is a great start but I know Im gonna want more.... Thanks for all the advice and direction... Keep it coming......

Glad your first experience was a good one. Try to only fill it half full for a few bowls. This will make it easier to smoke to the bottom of the bowl and aide in caking the heel.

I've been trying some of these Tinderbox tobacco's as well. You might also like "Sherlock's Choice" & "Special". The 1928 is on back order for me, so I've got an ounce of "North Sea" to try.
Glad ya got rid of that Chairman Mao pipe, what a piece of crap.

If you're new go to the local Walgreens and pick up a Missouri Meerschaum Corncob or a Dr Grabow.

You can't go wrong for the investment and they are the perfect "learning" pipes.

Yeah Im finding that this is probably gonna be my go to spot. They can be a lil pricey on some stuff but being able to try a bowl before I buy is real nice. Plus the sales guy has been really helpful.
