A young man at work recieved one of his Granddad's pipes that was in pretty rough shape. I repaired the stem and cleaned and polished it for him and he was happy. But thay's not the end of the story... he also started smoking it, since he already smoked cigs. He finally decided he wanted HIS pipe, so asked me to make him one. After some discusion about what he wanted... which being new to pipes, he was pretty much lost. He is a very talented young man when it comes to drawing, so I asked him..."If you were going to draw a self portrait of you smoking a pipe, what would it look like?"
    Heres his pipe....

He wanted it rusticated, with a medium stain. Bowl is 1 and 7/8" deep, 3/4" chamber, heigth is 2 and 1/4" 1 and a half at the widest point. 5 and 1/4" long. Drilled spot on, 5/32" air passage with counter drilled into the stem. I hope he likes it, after all.... he draw it! LoL!

Awesome looking pipe Basil, well done man.
In addition to the shaping, staining, stem-work, etc.... I dig the rustication.
    How'd you do it?

    Thanks!
I made a rustication tool, took a 5/16ths slip pin and ground some teeth in one end, looks kinda like a very small hole saw. Took a small scrap pc of 1" round Alum bar stock about 3" long, drilled a 5/16th hole in one end, shoved the slip pin in and I was in business!

Thanks Russell, I think I'm as excited making it for him as he is getting it! This kid is an amazing artist, and works packing a production line. Such a waste of excellent talent. As he started sketching, I new just what he was after. Can't wait to hand it to him tomorrow!

That's some rustication I can get behind. I really like it, and the pipe on the whole is lovely.
