Why do I need more than 1 pipe??????

I understand collecting(you should see my cigar selection).........but what makes one pipe different from another.BTW I have a Peterson Shannon B11 Volcano.I want a Peterson Irish Sea(just cause it looks cool and I'm an old Navy guy)...........but which one and why???Do different pipes make tobacco taste different?????Like a different roll in a family of cigars will effect flavor.

You don't need more than one pipe if:

    1) You smoke one bowl of tobacco per day. Briar pipes need time to dry out between smokes. Some folks smoke the same briar all day, day after day, but I would not recommend that.
    2) You smoke the same type of tobacco all the time. Once the pipe cakes, you'll get a particular "ghost" in the pipe, especially if you enjoy latakia in your blends, or aromatics. Once this ghost gets in your pipe, it will flavor all other blends you put it in your bowl. It's best to dedicate a pipe to heavily flavored blends.

A small rotation is best if you do not conform to the above. 3-5 pipes is a good number.

And yes, different pipes can make tobacco taste different. Or at least, different shapes. Larger pipes smoke differently than smaller pipes, a dublin shape will smoke different than a pot shape, etc.

Lastly, it's not really a question of need. If you continue to smoke the pipe (and hang out here at PSF), you'll likely develop at least a minor case of Pipe Acquisition Disorder. You'll then want to satisfy this urge to buy pipes. :D

And some blends just work in certain pipes better than others.

Because there are so many lonely, unloved pipes out there that need a good home! Won't you find it in your heart to adopt a couple (dozen)?

Seriously though, briars smoke different from meerschaums which smoke different from cobs which smoke different from those groovy old metal pipes. At the very least, you should get a cob for taking outside the house and/or trying out new blends which may ghost your briar(s).

Pipes are like Pringles.... you cant have just one.
Once you have the fever for the flavor, One pop and you cant stop.

So you get your first pipe, and your happy with it.
Then you think.... maybe I want a beater pipe that I dont have to worry about. (Pipe 2)
Then you want something a little more fancy (Pipe 3)
Then while looking at a Meerschaum you think, Man these look nice. (Pipe 4)
While surfing the forum, you spot a cool pipe made by one of the Talented people of the forum (pipe 5):thu2:
You get into history books and all of the sudden... you want a clay (pipe 6)

Before you know it... the collection grows.

As a teenager, I started with one pipe. A year later, I had four...three years later, it was over a dozen. I've had as many as 300, and as few as 20 in the intervening years. I *could* get by with one pipe.....but I won't.

ive amassed 10 in 7 months lmao, but having more than one can be practical and lets you experience, different smokes as tobacco always smokes slightly different in a cob then a little different in a briar then a little different in a clay, i only smoke a bowl 1 to 3 times a week, but having a good selection with different bowl sizes helps for whatever mood i feel, whether i want a 15 minute moment or a good 2-3 hour kick back i got them all there.

yeah i went for the bigger bowled pipes at first which is why i have a general and a macarthur corn cob, but only smoked them a couple of times as i found i need at least 3-4 hours for them, so they are my special occasion pipes then i went onto falcons, i have two and now i find i like a smaller bowled pipe just for them moments.
