McClelland Dark Navy Flake in the Edwardian Era calabash. Haven't smoked the old girl since Xmas...though i'd give her a whirl. English Breakfast tea and flurries on the side.

Be prepared to wait a while till it's nice and dry. And try it out in different pipes!

Took me a few minutes to get around to it (after all, I hadn't yet had any coffee) but this was a killer smoke. While it definitely seems the KD is cut slightly wider than it used to be, it's still a very fine ribbon cut and the stuff does burn quickly, all things considered. Even a full bowl in one of my largest pipes lasted a mere 20 minutes or so. But what a smoke! KD is a little tamer than it used to be - no hint of tongue bite and you get more of a nicotine induced deep tissue massage than a nicotine induced punch to the throat....but it was rich, smooth, satisfying, and...just dang! What a blend. If pipe tobacco were chocolate, OGS would be Hershey's milk chocolate, Christmas Cheer would be Lindt milk chocolate truffles, but Kendal Dark would be 95% cocoa dark chocolate....how they make such strong yet refined VA I haven't the slightest clue, but I love it!

It's half burley which, taste buds depending, may be what you are diggin'. Then again, the African VA's are hardly a slouch, so it's a question left to taste, both being stout? Dunno.

I like their Birdseye(straight VA? Hmm...nudge, nudge) better, personally, but that doesn't mean KD blows; in fact, I'm smoking some in a Falcon now....a mug of Rooibos w/cinnamon on the side.

Oh, you know you're right. I always thought it was pure VA for some reason (probably in part because only VA is listed on TR for Kendal Dark and I probably never bothered to look it up because I'm lazy). Always thought it tasted like dark fired burley. Anyway whatever it is it's great stuff. I recently tried some of the Dark Birdseye, too, and when I did I got it as a very fine ribbon (not quite shag) and had as of yet still only had Kendal Dark in a shag cut...at that point I would agree that DBE was better. But all things being equal, I gotta say I stand by the Kendal Dark now. Among my favorites for a good, strong, straightforward smoke

Had more Kendal Dark in the Croft's Premium Canadian before work. And again on break in the Dr. Grabow Savoy. And then in the Grabow again at the gas station waiting to get a church key from someone I was meeting.

I got home to find a P&C order waiting on the doorstep. Half pound of Exhausted Rooster, 500g of GH Brown Flake (unscented), three pouches of Five Brothers, and two pouches of Sail Green. Exactly what I ordered

Have a little Brown Flake rubbed up and drying on a dish now to smoke before my meeting tonight. First time with this one, I'm looking forward to it :)

    Feeling a bit nostalgic today:
Condor in a dedicated Falcon. Then,
SL in another Falcon. Ever feel like
you don't belong in a specific place? :(
