The mystery is solved. The finish on the pipe bubbled, so I sent it to Peterson in Ireland. Along with refinishing it, they countersunk the tenon with a funnel type drill. They also widened and deepened the slot in the button.

It does not gurgle at all now

Congrats. How was your experience dealing with the Peterson folks? Did they charge you to redrill the tenon?

No charge at all, took 7 weeks from post office in Australia till it was back in my letterbox. I'm very pleased with the whole thing, smokes very well now.

Albeit the ~Gurgle Mystery~ solved, however for those just starting out, I'd like to add that I had an issue with my pipes being gurglers (operator problem) initially. I discovered that I would exhale, ever so slightly back into the stem when smoking, even when snorkling, or french inhaling, causing excess moisture to build up in the bowl resulting in the infamous, gurgle. Once I developed a better smoking technique, the issue stopped altogether.

I would catch myself doing the exact same, and wonder "Is that good to do?" Now you have enlightened me, Thank you.
