Just wondering if anyone here has a pipe or pipes that aren't manufactured by some of the popular pipe makers that are superb smokers but aren't quite in the rockstar status of manufacturers, e.g. Peterson, Dunhill, Castello, just to highlight a few.

The reason I ask is that I'd picked up an unmarked Italian pipe recently and after cleaning it up and doing what refurb I could with it, decided to smoke it.

It turned out to be a fantastic smoker. I was really surprised.

Anyone else have any luck with pipes like this?

Some basket pipes are diamonds in the rough. I have one Italian billiard I use for aromatics, and honestly it's a fantastic smoker. The finish is crappy and the thing is too heavy, it's certainly not a pretty piece of briar, but it's extremely functional.

Every once in a while you're REALLY lucky and get one that smokes well AND looks good.

I don't have any pipes made by rock stars, but a Yello Bole - that smokes as good as anything else!....and you can't get much lowlier than a Yello Bole!

I've got 9 no-name pipes. A few of them are excellent, most of them are so-so and one of them is crappy. The crappy one is the pipe I'm considering lacquering gloss black.

I would consider my Vauen that kind of pipe. Seems like a lot of people haven't heard of Vauen. Perfectly drilled, well made and awesome fit and finish. They vary in price, and if you can get past the fact that they are made for a 9mm filter, they are great pipes. I will probably look for another one in the future.

My Baris serve me well. They're not that widely distributed in the States anymore, and the two examples I have are both estates, but they smoke great. I wouldn't hesitate to get another.

I found a random pipe made in the Black Forest at an antique sale. It's a branch about a foot in length with a tree trunk for a bowl. There are no makers marks and it still has bark on it. It's one of the best pipes I own.

I have a Archer bulldog that WK gave me that is a pretty good smoker. I've never heard of Archer, and assume it's a basket pipe.

I am a pathological Brakner Antique (rusticated) sniffer; they are excellent, typically classical or danish character with 2x excellent stemwork the norm.

If you're a freehand man, Celius.

I have an old Marxman squat bulldog it smokes better than most of my better pipes. I find myself reaching for it over my Savinelli and similarly priced pipes.

My Leonessa is a pretty good smoker, and looks cool too. Bowls a bit large for my tastes, but that's hardly a problem.
