Rattray's Dark Fragrant - it is that.

Perique and stoved virginia gone black as tar, this stuff looks a little frightening. In fact, it smells more like a dessert than tobacco in the big 100g tin. It is beautifully, lightly, pungent. OK - stoved virginia isn't as scary as it looks. The tang is gone, the flavor of hay is gone but a mild hint of sweet lemon barely under a heavy top note of perique are sure there. This tobacco smokes mild, gentle and light with an aftertaste of perique that can't be missed.

It's almost too light considering it's so dark, if you know what I mean.

I believe I have a sealed 6 year old tin of this sitting on the shelf somewhere. Might have to break it open.

I can't say what aging does to stoved Virginia. I'm guessing not much. Anyone?

Uh oh... I accidentally DGT'd half a bowl and - oh my - it was stellar. I am leaving this tin to air a dry for a few weeks. I may have misunder-estimated it. Jury is out.

Aging does nice things to it but they are subtle. I just smoked some McClellands Black Shag from 1999 and while it didn't open up new vistas of enjoyment, it was a bit tastier. Can't really say it mellowed the tobacco because it's very mellow to begin with, but aging seems to be worthwhile. I also dip into a 1995 tin of Rattrays Black Virginia from time to time and aging it makes it more match-friendly.

The half-day DGT was a change I'd call anything but subtle. It ended up the way I wish all tobacco to be.

I have neglected to try that with Black Shag but you're right - and it surprises me that I haven't because McClellands Virginia #25 contains stoved VA and it DGT's like a mofo. Somehow the charring light and a fair bit of outside air transforms a decently good tobacco blend into something stellar.

    Bingo again!

Between the two of us, given enough time and unlimited funding, we might figure everything out.

I have a tin of Dark Star from 2003 that I dip into now and then that is fabulous! I have some from 2010 that I smoke all the time that I love as well but the extra age gives it depth and richness. Just a hint more of a molasses flavor. Almost smokey.
