Hey,

I just found a sealed tin of Edgeworth High Grade Slice by Larus & Bro. at an antique market today. Still had the plastic wrap around the outside and of course the seal unbroken. I cracked it to smell it (and plan on smoking it - of course) and it smells awesome.

Any idea when Larus & Bro stopped manuf.? I believe it became an Orlick product before stopping all together, right? So how old might my tin be? It's got the hinged top and the writing on the paper liner looks pretty old.

Thanks for any info.

We just don't have antique markets that turn up wonderful finds like that this side of the pond sadly. Oh how I envy you!

Obviously I don't know the tobacco and things may have been very different in the Staes but the last time I saw tobacco in a tin with a hinged lid was around 1969/70 and it was Players "Sun Valley."

Once again congrats on your find and happy smoking,

Gerry

I could tell you the exact age if I were able to smoke it. But I'd need a fairly large sample. Say, half a tin or so. :D
Wow - what a true bud .... https://pipesmokersforum.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hahaha-024.gif

...someone else might try and take advantage of you... :icon_eek:

Hey All,

Found this in an archive online:

So I may be smoking a tin of 35+ yr old tobacco.

So far I get a really nice, mellow smoke. Has a slightly sweet cure that reminds me of some MacBaren's "honey" taste but not too strong. Closest thing I can compare it to right now is MacBaren's Golden Extra.

Just wanted to update on the timeline question for those interested.

That's awesome! If I were you, I'd cellar half in a mason jar and pull it out again in 3 years when it turns 40!

i am willing to trade: me not stealing it from you, for: you giving it to me voluntarily.

Last Edgeworth I saw (and bought three) was $25/tin at the Richmond pipe show. I'll crack one of them some day.
