I've never even gave much thought to cobbs. Since joing this forum and reading about them, my curiosity got the best of me. Why haven't I tried them? I decided to order a couple of them with my last tobacco order. Missouri Meerschaum-Washington. I took the filter out and lit up a bowl of Penzance. I could taste the cobb the first few puffs. It reminded me of chicken feed. ( a good thing) I know that might sound crazy but it did. I use to feed my grandpaw's chickens when I was little and the feed dust would get in my nose scooping up the feed. I had a good smoke from a simple little pipe. Thank you cobbers out there for turning me on to something new. For those of you out there who haven't tried a cobb, include one in your next tobacco order for an extra couple of bucks. I think I'll use this cobb for my yard pipe. Now I did take the filter out. Do you real cobbers out there leave it in or take it out? I didn't want to deal with a soggy nasty filter..

I used to leave the filters in on mine, but since I got Forever Stems for all of them without filters, things have been that much more enjoyable. For me, they turn an inexpensive champ of a smoker into what could be considered the king of bang for buck in the pipe world.

Obviously I am not a fan of filters. Smoke however you like it best.

I've tried both, and find I like the filters in.

There is virtually no difference in terms of flavor whether or not you have the filter in or not. I keep the filters in for insurance against wet smokes.

Forever Stems? Where do you find those? I assume they are a better quality replacement. I feel I could bite the end off the current one without much effort. Thanks!

It's always good to hear of a first cob experience.

Walker Briar Works Forever stems are not only better quality, but come in a myriad of shapes, sizes and colors too. I love 'em!

I used my filter for the first smoke and then never went back.

Switching out the stem is the tip of the iceberg for cob customizing around here!

When I smoked them I kept the filter in to maintain proper draw, also helps keep the shank clean and dry.

Chicken feed, that's it! Never could describe that taste from a cob, but it's just like chicken feed smells. I also find it pleasant. I don't use the filters, but I cut about one-third of a pipe cleaner, zig-zag it and stuff it in the filter chamber to reduce the draw a little bit. It gets nasty looking, but not as goopy as that filter gets.

I am split on the use of filters. Sometimes I use them often times not.

You can also use the Savinelli 6mm balsa filters in a filtered corn cob pipe as well.

Many of my corn cobs have had their stems replaced though. Either with the Missouri Meerschaum Freehand stems (got them from Aristocob), or with stems from an Ebay seller called corncobpipes. Both options convert the pipe to non-filtered.

Wait till ya have that sucker broken in. Even better smokes!
    Welcome to the cob world.
I went from 1 to 7 at last count and only have 1 Forever stem. I love it, but can't afford 6 more at this time.
Well maybe 4 since one is a mini cob and 1 is a nose warmer.
    Enjoy the new journey.
    Cobs rock!
