I tagged along to a conference with my wife in Columbus and finally got a chance to visit Smokers Haven. All I can say is that it's a great shop run by a great guy! If your in the area, you should visit.

    They have pipe tobacco

In addition to seeing all the pipes and having a great time talking to the owner Premal Chheda, Premal was generous enough to show me the workshop that he shares with Bill Shalosky.

Here is one of Premal's pipes

My photo does not do it justice. It's out of my price range, but it one great little pipe!

Here are few shots from their shop

Yep, Premal is one of the Good Guys. I bought two unsmoked Yaniks from him for a sweet price and he threw in a tin of Krumble Kake... which is probably the last tin of Smokers Haven tobacco he had at the time (0r still has). I'm not surprised that he gave you the tour. :th1:

I was there once back when they had tobacco-tobacco. Very nice house, SH.

Do they still have Red Hat and Vollmer & Nilsson pipes? The pipes I saw there a few years ago were quite special (along with all the Penzance, Stonehaven, Krumble Kake and 20th Anniversary Imported).

I'm not sure if they still had Red Hat and Vollmer & Nilsson pipes, there was so much to take in my eyes sort of glazed over. Certainly there were lots of fancy pipes by well know makers. Very impressive.

Thank you for sharing, dwaugh. Nice, proper B&M they have there. I have scores of relatives just a few minutes away in Springfield; looks like I'll have to plan a visit.

Yeah, that place has always carried some pretty decent pipes, and it's good to see they actually have some tobacco on hand. Did they have some tins in again?

It's a great shop, and formerly was a landmark of an establishment. But for a year or two they had virtually no tobacco on hand. I usually left pretty disappointed. But when I first started smoking a pipe, they were a godsend, and by the time I was about to move here to Indiana, they were starting to finally get more tobacco, including some stuff beyond the jars of loose stuff.

Great thing was they carried both Samuel Gawith AND Gawith, Hoggarth, & Co.

I didn't expect this, but I miss being able to go there. Even when they had a truly pitiful selection of tobacco, they had some that I really liked - and at good prices.

Great pictures, that is one place I'd love to visit some day. I have two GBD's that came from the original shop.

If I'm not mistaken, the owner went through some very hefty personal health and financial problems at the same time. Great to see him back on his feet

I can believe this, but I would suspect financial problems may have had to do with changing location and renovations and things of that nature to the point of being unable to stock, and the lack of stock slowing down sales and making it harder still to get new product.

I've only really ever dealt with two people there, I don't know if either of them were the owner. They were both nice enough, but the younger guy was pretty dismissive of the other major local shop, Pipes and Pleasures, despite having almost nothing but empty jars in his own store.

It is good to see them doing well again, though. I hope business picks up for them.

I found this bit about the original owner of Smokers Haven, Joe Zieve. I don't know who owned the store before Premel.
