I havnt been in my local shop for a week, so I decided to stop by today. Its not terribly local, really...about 20 mins from home, but isnt bad when added to my usual commute. I went in planing to purchase the following: lighter fluid, pack of pipe cleaners, and an ounce of C&D Virginia Gentleman, to try. I go in, tell him what I want, and decided to make conversation. So I says to him, I says "what would you suggest for someone who isnt a fan of the super sweet aromatics?"He thinks, and starts giving me a tour of the tins on the shelf...pretty common stuff. Then he pulls out a jar of something called BLWB (Burley Light Without a Bite, by Tinderbox). He asks if I have my pipe on me...so I ran out to the car and grabbed it. He loaded it with the BLWB. Now, while he was loading it, I knew it was gunna be tough...he is primarily a cigar smoker, and it showed in his packing technique...anyway, I lit up in the shop, and tasted it. Due to his pack, the draw was almost nil, but I was able to get it goin. To me, it tasted a bit like Prince Albert, only with a little more density. I didnt think I would like it...but I did.

So I ended up getting an ounce. Ironically, due to the horrible pack job, I ended up having to draw too hard, and the stuff bit me. But, I had some on my way home, and it was pleasant. I also really like the Virginia Gentleman. All in all a good day at the shop...

...he also threw in a copy of Pipes and Tobaccos Magazine. I dont know why, perhaps because ive been there thrice in as many weeks. But I looked through it...its proper pipe porn. I did see a tin that interested me on that shelf...some McClellands Wilderness...but thats for another trip...the next trip will be to restock on Half and Half...and maybe sample something else ;)...

    Nice report, thanks for sharing!

Sounds like you've got at least a half-way decent shop there. :) :bing:

I forgot to add that I kinda felt obliged to buy some of the stuff he let me try...but it all worked out well in the end.

    Is it a Tinderbox shop?

Not entirely. They have a few of their blends, but most are house blends. I wish they had the Tinderbox Balkan, I 'd like to try that...Wilshire as well.

The thing is, the Tinderbox doesn't blend their own tobaccos. BLWB is a Lane blend, and Wilshire is Lane's 1-Q renamed. That's why I was wondering if it's a Tinderbox - because I wouldn't have guessed anyone else would be attributing blends to them. Maybe they do it because they're also relatively well known as TB blends.

I think Tinderbox is the brand, and Lane the blender...but Im not really sure. I wish they had more retail blends actually. I like the idea of a house blend, but this particular house has a lot of aromatics. I dont mind a natural aromatic, that is, an aromatic that is mainly a cavandish that is cured with something flavored, more scented really...but its the blends that are sprayed with chemical flavorings that I dont like. They are great if someone else is smoking them, but the smoker really gets nothing out of it...other than some bite.

Sounds like an ok shop ! Have the guy there get a list of his pipe smoking customers [ even if theres only 5 ] and motivate him to do a " smoker " one after noon or when ever . If you guys spend a few bucks on some stuff ... he'll probably dig it even more . The more time/$ you spend there .... the better things will get as far as blends and stuff . The " smoker " is good cause it will help him regin in on what you guys are after . Maybe he has a smoker already for cigars .... thats ok , but having a pipe smoker is best . Glad you enjoyed your trip there !
