I just picked up a Peterson Tankard in a trade and since my other pipes have large to xl bowls I was wondering what to smoke in a small bowl like this. I was thinking 1792 but 1/2 the post I read say go small bowl for 1792 and the other 1/2 say you need to smoke it in a larger bowl. Any suggestions for this FNG would be appreciated. Thanks

The reason to smoke 1792 in a small pipe is that it is very, very strong, and a great big Italian pipe full of 1792 would kill you.

    Kill me, anyway.

Small bowls are excellent at offering really sharp flavor delineation - none of the muddling you get at the end of a big bowl. So I'd suggest a light, fragrant virginia, like Tordenskjold, or Orlik Golden Sliced.

No to hyjack this thread but I have a size 5 equivalent Tinsky longshank devoted to 1792 and I know a certain member here planning a wedding that loves big fat bowls of 1792! :goodjob:

Back on topic, I'd say use the pipe when time is short and just smoke what you like in it! My :D anyway...

I second Andrew's suggestion. Not that THAT probably matters much.

I like Haddo's in smaller bowls for a ribbon cut. Also, if the smoking chamber is narrow it should smoke flakes well too. Perhaps a bowl of bullseye, PS navy or even Solani's ABF (if you like burley).

i feel that 1792 is served better in smaller pipes with few exceptions (generally medium bore tall billys or conical bowls) as the flavor kinda dissipates and after the shock of the tonquin you can't really taste the VA complexities. small bowl is done before you have that problem.

that being said 1792 or any of the stronger lakelands, esp dark flake, scented or otherwise.

I agree with the Golden Slice really shining in a small bowl. I had ( :thumbsu: ) a lovely small Meer that really shone with that litte beauty. I tried it in a MM General just for laughs, and it was not as nice to put it mildly.

Flaked Va's & Va-Pers are good in a small-bore but they are also quite good in "craters" (huge bowls) too!

Yes, indeed. One must have a highly polished brass set of... marbles to enjoy that blend.

Must be why I love it : :velho:
