Member Coda inspired this thread with a comment in another thread. It made me curious, so I thought I'd ask the group.

Name one blend that has been discontinued that we're actually glad is no longer with us. In other words, what are some blends that have NOT become larger than life since they've stopped being produced. OTC's are eligible, but I'd prefer to hear about non-OTC's.

Flying Dutchman comes to mind, a few people may wax nostalgic about it, but I'm pretty sure a bowl-full would lay that to rest. This stuff is bitey, it smells great, but ouch, I'd rather lick a red-hot cheese grater. And, not surprisingly, a tobacco named after a ghost ship will haunt your pipe as well.

Sadly, there are more around than should be, and some of the ones that have gone away should have remained. How could Edgeworth go away and something like Paladin stay? Or M79 (Sorry Ming).

Unfortunately the only blend I have found completely and utterly unsmokeable is still in production (PS Peaches and Cream)

Others that have been "ok" but I've never heard praises:
    Lane's 10 downing st
    Lane's rum and maple
    Peter Stokkebye's swiss chocolate

I haven't seen any Dan Monkey's Mixture lately. I got suckered into a bowl of that once upon a time.

I haven't heard of that one, but I did smoke a house blend named Monkeyshines once. It was ok until I stopped to think about what part of the monkey is smooth enough to shine.

For a brief while about 30 years ago Flying Dutchman also made a black cavendish blend. It smelled like stale sneakers and tasted putrid. FD regular blend did taste good but, as you said, it was very bitey.

All things aside, am I forced to assume that the new match by Altadis is better than the original Flying Dutchman?

That is a possibility, I have some Flying Dutchman in the cellar ( A gift from my girlfriend's father), I'll have to buy some of the match, and work up the courage to submit to a tongue scorching, I'll let you guys know when it happens.

Wow, this thread died a quick and tragic death!

I think Coda was right - discontinuing a blend is almost assuredly a recipe for its clamor to come back. Either that or the poor ones just never go away! :ohyh:

Absolutely, which leads to some head-scratchers, why did (insert baccy here) go away, while you can still get (insert baccy here)? I think it comes down to nostalgic memories of so-so blends, we tend to gloss over the bad attributes of those long gone blends. I haven't heard anyone lament the disappearance of Plowboy pipe and chewing tobacco, but who knows, there might be a guy out there hoarding all he can find.
