Got a box in the mail today. Judging from the size, I guessed I'd just gotten some pipe books from my former-pipe-smoker father. I was right, there were some pipe books. There were also these:

There's only the one tin of Raven's, but there are six of the Red Ribbon, all 1983. (The Raven's is a 2001.)
One of the Ribbons had a dent in the side, so I opened it to make sure it's alright (naturally). You know what? It's just fine. Like, real fine, man. Smoooooooth.

So, now I don't know what the heck to do with 'em. I don't remember liking Raven's Wing very much back when a person could easily get it (the price sticker on it says "$7.90," remember those days?), so maybe I should just frame it and hang it on the wall or something. I can envision smoking the Ribbon, but I don't know if I would feel right about depriving my brethren and sistren of the briar by being greedy about it. I'll have to do some careful ethical reflecting, I guess.

Well, I can attest to the '83 McCranies. Really great stuff. I saw a few tins of it for sale at the Richmond CORPS show for $20 each. Should have picked one up but I blew my budget on a '61 Dunnie Root Briar billiard.

Very nice!! I have heard good things about the McCranie's Red Ribbon/Flake. I almost picked up a tin, but bought some other stuff this round. Great gift box!!

Niiiiiiice! I'd trade you something for
one of those Red Ribbons, but I don't
know what you'd want/what is equal
    value.

BTW, what books did you get?

You've got a great dad there Andy, take good care of'em. All my old man left me was an empty bottle of booze and a bad habit.

Secrets of Enjoyable Pipe Smoking, Mark Beale, M.D.
The Pipe Smoker's Tobacco Book, Robert F. Winans
The Ultimate Pipe Book, Richard Carleton Hacker
The Perfect Pipe, H. Paul Jeffers
Rare Smoke Vol. 1, Richard Carleton Hacker

Not only did I get pipes and tobaccos (and reamers and pipecleaners and tampers and books,) I also got a love of Bach. :) (Both parents were music teachers and symphony musicians.) That's even rarer than Raven's Wing nowadays. Well, maybe not, but it seems that way sometimes.

83 McCranie's Red Ribbon is wonderful!

Never smoked Ravens Wing but if you don't smoke it...... After all, your Dad did give it to you and tastes do change.... Read up on it on TR and see if it's for you or not. If not, cellar it! If it's a maybe, smoke it and jar it! You know what to do!

What an awesome package to receive as a surprise! Nice!

My young cellar probably has nothing tempting for you. I do have 2 8 oz widemouth jars that have been not been opened since I packed them with Red Rapparee and Esoterica Margate?

Andy, what if anything else would you take on a trade for some of the RR?

As a violist, I have a love/hate relationship with Bach. I love his treatment of the viola, but I swear he requires me to do a myriad of things that just aren't physically possible for viola players to do!

Andy, don't be foolish. Keep it all, smoke it all. Well, maybe save the Ravens Wing for the down payment on your retirement home. There's times to share, and times not to share. That 83 crop isn't so rare that somebody can't spring for a tin, hell, it's on ebay all the time. The Ravens Wing, well, you know how rare that stuff is. Keep it all, man.
