Recently on a trip - I found myself running a bit short of my tobacco supply for the day, so took a chance and bought a tin of MacBaren Virginia Flake at a small tobacconist. My limited experience with MacBaren blends in the past, has been a little disappointing - mainly the Scotch Blend, and a couple of the 'aros', but was pleasantly surprised by the VA flake - not quite the calibre of the OGS that I use often, but IMO a similar brew. I soon discovered that like a lot of these light VA's, care is needed re packing, cadence etc. to get the best from them, and avoid things getting a bit 'overheated'. Well, the upshot is - that I now have thrown caution to the wind, and a pound of MacB Virginia #1 is now on the way over from Uncle Sam. It's comparatively cheap, alledgedly a pure, unadulterated VA mixture, so my question is - is it the same stuff as the flake?......I can always use it for blending if neccessary, but good, bad, or indifferent - tell me what you think please, as I don't visit tobacco reviews site much, or set much store by them when I do!:)

If I recall correctly, I found MacB Va No 1 to be a nice, sweet Va and yes, you do have to really watch it or it can get you. I enjoyed it and have some in a jar somewhere, waiting for another go. I don't have my notes in front of me, but from what I remember, it's got a bit of the MacB honey flavour to it.

I seem to remember the flake was much sweeter than the Va. #1.

I would have - but my supplier in US only lists the mixture in bulk, and price was a deciding factor! (before someone gives me names of etailers - there is only one that I can use reliably, and 'economically';).

    Mixing MacBaren Va#1 with Condor?
    No thank you please.

Like adding bad mayonnaise to a gastrointestinal infection.

I've been playing around with mixing MB VA #1 with a few other Virginias. I am no expert by any means, but I've enjoyed mixing it with some McClelland Virginias, some Gawith flakes, and have enjoyed the results. BTW - I like all of my Virginias as "stand-alones", too.

I love good Virginia's.....and the one thing I have found is mixing a little Kendal Kentucky with them brings out their best.I started with G.L.Pease Montgomery and KK....Today was H&H Virginia Spice and KK.Now I need a pound of KK for my evil experiments.

Someone recommending MacB Virginia #1 is not a sensible reply.
It's just about as sensible as recommending a chainsaw for a haircut.

When I first tried Mac Baren Mixture....I fried my tongue. But when I revisited it....I found it to be really nice. Staying with Mac Baren products and learning to really sip and slowly enjoy a bowl of tobacco was probably the best thing I ever did for enjoyment of the hobby. Virginia no.1 is probably one of the sweetest and nicest virginia tobacco that I smoke. I reach for it before I reach for FVF now. Enjoy the hell out of it! and yes ...pound of V#1, pound of GE, and pound of Mixture is in my cellar right now.
