Has anyone had the experience of buying what is a ribbon cut in the tin and then buying the same brand in bulk and receiving it in small, fine pieces, like a crumbled flake? Is there an explanation?

What blend/brand are you inquiring about?

Could be you got the bottom of the bag where all the smaller pieces settled. I buy MB is bulk and have never had it happen, yet.

Which specific blend are we referring to?

The only one that took me by surprise in bulk was Tordenskjold Virginia Slices. It was more like a flake in the tin, but in bulk the slices are 14+ inches long and somewhat frazzled along the edges.

Sounds like you got the dregs of the bag

Can't say that I have as of yet. But I tend to buy bulk in flake tobaccos over other cuts. I have nothice that even flake breaks up to the appearance of crumble cake in the bottom of the bag or jar. Was the entire mixture of this consistency?

The word "fine" was misleading, it's not like the bottom of a bag - but mostly all in small pieces - not ribbon.

That is interesting. Have you noticed it smoking any differently regarding flavour?

Less flavor, needs more draw, which may make it smoke faster. A little hotter, needs more tamping.

I havent had that happen to me exactly like that, but Ive bought 2oz of a bulk at my local B&M on one day where its ribbon, and on another day, near the bottom of the jar, where its more loose and crumbled. The only real difference, that I have found, is that you have to treat them differently; the ribbon cut can be packed in a bit, but the loose/crumbly stuff needs to be packed very lightly...

Might this come from an older bag?

Ya sure you got the real deal or a match ? Sometimes the Match will taste like a blend but not have the same .. everything else

Hmm... I thought Balkan Sasieni in bulk was Balkan Supreme. The story I got was only the tinned version had the Sasieni handle.

Then again, it was a "story"... picked up 2nd hand... not sure of its accuracy.
