From near Lake Tyler myself. I used to drive through Livingston every time I when home on leave going up Hwy 59 (via Hwy 77) up from Kingsville TX where I was stationed for a short bit while in the Navy. I always thought that I'd retire just north of there in Diboll or Angelina County somewhere. The red dirt is poor soil but is acidic which flowering plants love and sandy which drains well. I'd simply work "double-dig" or maybe a "raised bed" and work in a LOT of compost/humus. Some folks will tell you to put peat moss underneath to hold moisture but that isn't needed that far east as it rains plenty and would only promote root fungus etc.
