Where has all the tobacco gone?

Ok so I haven't bought any pipe tobacco for a few years due to the fact that I had stocked up on all my favorites. Well now some of my favs are getting low and I want to build up my supply. For example I'm looking for Sam G FVF and Esoterica Penzance but it seems like every place I try is out. And don't get me started on Dunhill! I still don't understand what's going on with them. Is there a tobacco shortage or what? This reminds me of the cigar boom of the late 90's when you could only buy certain brands of cigars in very limited quantities if you could find them ie Arturo Fuente. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

It's more than that, Jesla. There's all sorts of things in the wind. Look at the style of lawsuit that exists - let's call it Joe vs Big Tobacco where Joe is dying of lung cancer and sues Rothman's or Camel or whoever, right? And the court finds that the cigarette companies were evasive or downright deceptive about the product etc and finds them liable.

I strongly suspect that we are not seeing certain products on this continent because the suppliers are aware of the political climate.

Add to that various dilemmas in both supply and distribution (Dunhill or Gawith), the various taxes making tobacco prices go through the roof (and the stocking up that goes with that), coupled with a fading demand throughout the world for pipe tobacco (and tobacco in general I imagine) and you've got a business that it may or may not be worthwhile to be in, depending on how you are set up.

FVF and Penzance are both the "tobacco du jour" as well - their popularity is huge, and the shortages of both got them both bought right up.

But I've heard of places waiting for restock on things like Mac Baren Mixture, you know... and that's just wrong. Wrong I say!

Yeah, while making my last order from smokingpipes.com I noticed that they were out of most of what I wanted. No SG Squadron Leader, Navy Flake, or FVF, or much SG at all for that matter, no RLGF, OGS, or Balkan Sasieni. It was a DISASTER!

Well, not that bad, but I was very disapointed.

Not to mention, but didn't the town SG is in have some flooding? FVF was getting scarce even before the new tax scare.

We've got the same problem this side of the pond. Pipe smoking's deeply out of fashion and one heck of a lot of cigarette smokers have switched to bootleg RYO because of excessive taxation - so brands are getting de-listed and even supermarkets have stopped selling previous big sellers - you can't even get Erinmore or Craven Aromatic from an Asda (Walmart).

As for good pipe shops/tobacconists even though I live in Central Scotland along with most of this country's population I have to drive over an hour now to get to the nearest specialist shop.

Thank Heavens for Rich!

I noticed this declining trend as well. When I started smoking in 2002, you had Walgreens tobacco center (now gone, I believe due to lawsuit), Walmart carried 4-5 different brands (now I see 3, mine carries 2 - PA and Captain Black) and a large amount of smoke for less chains carrying large amounts of by the oz pipe tobaccos, 1 1/2 oz boxes, large bags.

Now Ive two options left here in Casselberry - Ol' Time Cigars (lovely shop) and Walmart. If I want to drive to Oviedo there's another shop (Harry's I believe) but thats it for about 40 minutes.

I remember when I wanted Silk Cut cigs...NO ONE could get them, except a shop an hour down the interstate. Now that shop doesnt carry them due to some illegality.

I know the economy is bad - but geez, it's making it hard for a man to enjoy any vice except liquor and strange (see your local Craigslist)

Really disappointed right now, got on smokingpipes.com and thought I had tracked down some FVF, so I jumped on it and ordered 32 oz. (way more than I think I could ever smoke). Unfortunately, even though it let me add it to my shopping cart and buy it, I come to find an email informing me that they do not in fact have it in stock.

You can at least find Penzance on eBay (though it's not cheap) but seems like FVF is nowhere to be found. Guess I'll just have to hope for a miracle if I ever want to get to try this one.
